Tried on the Coke 16710 GMT

So I have been looking to acquire my next watch which will be a GMT. I have been lusting over the 16710 over the internet and fascinated with the idea of the bezel changes. Its a beautiful watch! I finally had a chance to tried it on at an AD yesterday but was slightly disappointed. While its a beautiful piece, it just did not feel substantial on my 7” wrist. Maybe it was the bracelet of the 5 digit. I just prefer the feel of a modern watch.

I guess my search continues for the Pepsi BLRO.....

5 digits aren’t for everyone I guess, although based strictly on your wrist size certainly wouldn’t make it feel insubstantial. Obviously it did, so on to 6 digits

I had one and loved it at the time. It's a tad small for my tastes at the moment

Weight and being perceived substantial does not make any watch better, the 16710 is a Rolex icon no matter the colour insert. A fantastic movement and great long term accuracy with a lot of history, thats what's makes a great watch ,and not because feeling substantial on the wrist.

Couldn’t agree more. The 40mm is plenty for today’s wrist, indeed the sub was considered big for a long while. It’s marketing and fashion that dictates these things now. Most also seem to equate heft with luxury and forget that the old bracelets are held together by the same pins as the new ones and are in actuality no stronger for that heft. What I like about my 16610, is I forget it’s on the wrist.

I can relate to the OP. The 16710 Pepsi really pops when looking at pictures on social media and YouTube etc. Tried one on finally last week at a shop and it just didn’t have that pop to me. Beautiful watch but just ended up not being for me. My 16570 polar now satisfies my 5 digit itch.

Perhaps the word “substantial” is the wrong term. It just felt small and light on my wrist. I prefer a bit of weight on my wrist that’s all. The reference is beautiful though. Nothing against the 16710.

You can simply buy a modern bracelet with 16710 and it'll be perfect and adds weight which you wanted.

Bingo - that's what I did and it makes the 16710 a better wear for me. Like the size of the 5 digit case and the feel of the modern bracelet/clasp. Some people don't like to mix and match...but this is a great combo.

It's interesting how we look for opposite things in watches. One of the reasons I love my 16710 is because it is light. I forget it's on my wrist most of the time.

I have sold watches in the past because their substantial weight was constantly reminding me that they were there, and I didn't like that. To me, a watch is a faithful companion that never weighs me down or reminds me of their presence.

I find it hard to really 'know' what I think without having time with it..

I appreciate my 16710 for exactly the reasons you are not bonding with it.

I can tell you that of all my watches, by far I get the most compliments on the Pepsi. I'm sure it's partly a matter age but while I have a new BLRO on indefinite 'order', for me, it's flashier and showy and I'm much more comfortable with the low key 16710.

I got a 124060 today, feels a little bit sleeker than my 114060, so I am not all about the 5 digits.

To each their own of course.

I might be weird but I really do find a certain charm in the old 5 digit bracelets. They wear light on the wrist and somewhat noisy but that's part of that bygone time and this does bring a certain emotion when worn. Hard to explain I guess.

If you really like the 16710 do not worry about the 'non-substantial' feel of the bracelet, get one with SEL in best condition as the solid links add more weight/volume to the bracelet. The watch is indeed an icon and you will start to appreciate it regardless of the initial feel of the bracelet.

I have a 7.5" wrist, have several 6 digit references and still enjoy the 16710. Not better or worse, just a different feel. I really like having the diversity of 5 and 6 digits in my collection.

You really can’t compare the experience to a 6-digit or you will be disappointed. For all they lack in “upgrades” compared to the newer versions they make up in charm. But I know exactly how you feel. My first sub was a 16610 and when I got it I’ll admit I was a little let down. I quickly traded it for a 116710 and the ceramic GMT fit the bill for me much better. Now I’ve come to appreciate both 5 and 6 digits and enjoy them both for what they are.

It’s important not to confuse weight or heft with robustness and strength.

Anything properly engineered like the 78360 bracelet is meant be to strong and light.

I have this watch and agree it's not substantial in size or weight. If that is your criteria it likely won't be the watch for you. I notice the difference in it compared to my 16613 Bluesy.

The 5 digits feel like toys, compared to the modern references. I wore the crap out of my 5 digit 16613LB, and made the mistake of trying on the 6 digit version when it was first released. Suddenly, the watch that I loved felt cheap. I waited until they updated to the sunburst dial, then never looked back! I also found the improvements of the maxi dial to be more visually appealing. Like others have said, “to each, their own!”

I grew up admiring my father’s 16760 and understand inheriting these watches but personally would not pay the absurd premiums attached to watches that have been well worn by a stranger. Maybe for a NOS model but even then it is priced high due to demand.

Is it crazy I’m thinking about getting myself a Tudor GMT for now while I wait for the BLRO. Tried it on the other day and liked it. They are not as refined as Rolex but definitely a great value IMO.

Same issue here. My wrist is in the 7.5" range and the smaller size and lack of wrist presence began to bother me pretty early on. Also really wasn't loving the bracelet which felt light and tinny to me. The clasp in particular was disappointing. Love the history of the watch its a great watch for smaller wrists, but for me it bugged me more and more as time went on. Once the SD43 was released I knew that was the watch for me. I traded the 16710 towards a new stickered SD43 and have been much happier. All I can tell you is that if you feel a watch is small on you initially or lacks presence, those feelings won't go away over time. They will most likely magnify.
