Biden’s Rolex causes controversy

This article NYT published today has gotten lots of pushback on Twitter, causing “Rolex” to become trending #1 on Twitter, which is quite a big deal.

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/22/f...lex-biden.html

Let’s not discuss the politics, but I do agree that the article is crap and sub-standard for NYT. A man who has achieved enough to become president of a country, deserves to wear whatever he wants, even if it’s a jubilee with a smooth bezel.

Definitely not. They and all the mainstream media have been spewing crap for years. It’s all about clicks, no more journalistic integrity.

Agree with you! Free country, that includes Biden’s freedom to wear whatever he feels like wearing

That would make me more impressed lol. But honestly, who cares? The piece said it’s worth $7000. Is that a lot of money to most people? I doubt it, considering so many spend money on things I wouldn’t care for. It’s $200 a month for 3 years, or about what a few meals and coffee cost these days.

that is a fortune to most/many - especially on something like a watch.

look at how many we have that need stimulus money, are out of work, have just lost their job or job prospect, will have to possibly find a new career as we pull away and focus on different industries because of either COVID or a push for cleaner technology.

I do think the article makes a point as many/most presidents tried to avoid displays of wealth to seem more relatable so this is a bit different. I also agree with the poster above, for someone who essentially has only worked in government/politics they would have to know this is a consideration and could be commented on.

Wow!! Jaded perspective! Completely out of touch.

A huge percentage of the population lives paycheck to paycheck and would never consider spending $2,000 (let alone $7,900) on a stainless steel wristwatch.

That’s an interesting perspective. No one said whether people want to buy a $7k watch, but if they could if they wanted to. I stand by my observation, that it’s an attainable goal for most people here. If $7k is not attainable as a once-a-life extravagance in America then we are a poor country indeed.

Quite clueless observation. It’s like saying a $80,000 Porsche or $10,000 handbag is a reasonable once-in-a-lifetime extravagance for the average American.

Average citizens are worried about paying the rent, buying food, filling their prescriptions, and figuring out how to send their kids to college.

It wasn’t that long ago when a Rolex adorned the wrist of US presidents. Something to plan and work hard for - an aspirational piece.

What’s the big problem with him wearing a DJ? It’s not like trump didn’t wear vacheron/pateks...

Imagine if he wore the new 126610LV or the Nautilus... the Twitter world would implode!

Cheers

Did you see the video of him at the end of his 8 years as VP when he finally got it out of storage? He hadn't driven it in 8 years and still couldn't drive it out in public, but they drove it around in a parking lot with his signature Ray Bans.

Maybe you can only wear a nice watch when you are the former President:

Watch Spotting Former President Barack Obama Seen Wearing A Rolex Cellini
This marks the first time Obama has been seen wearing a luxury mechanical watch – and while it's a Rolex, it's not your average Rolex.

During his term in office, Obama actually wore a custom made watch that was given to him by the secret service. That's far more special and rarer than a Cellini, since only agents had access to the pieces.

Very cool show. I saw a fun one where Jay and his crew invited one of the Porsche engineers over and they dissected the PDK in the 2009 Porsche 911 when that first came out. It was pretty cool to see the inner workings of it.

Jerry Seinfeld did a cool episode of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee where he picked up Obama in a sweet 1963 Corvette Stingray and again, they couldn't leave the grounds so they just drove around the circle drive in front of the White House!

Yep, Biden has a nice old vette, the episode I saw he drag raced Jay in the newest version and while Biden did a nice burnout the new Vette was much faster then his older classic model

He claimed he buried the speedo on a Jay Leno show . Its a 327/300. He must have forgot the speedo goes to 160.

What a stupid article. Jealousy at its worst. Many presidents in the past have worn Rolex. Obama wore a custom made piece given to him by the secret service. Likely not as expensive as Biden's Rolex, but the fact that it was limited edition and so few pieces were made, plus only available to SS agents, that makes it pretty darned special.

They sold Obama's Secret Service watch at the Secret Service store. If you had a friend in the SS or worked in the building you could buy one from the store. However, as soon as the world knew Obama had one, the store sold out in an hour heh. I missed it by a day or two as I was headed over to get one. It was not expensive at all but super cool with the SS seal on the dial.

Gotta love the hype.

I was on another forum with a member who was an SS agent. He had one and posted pics of it right after he got it. He said they started out as a normal item but then the hype turned it into a collector's item and then suddenly you couldn't get it after that.
