Rolex "Snobs"
Any SS owners experienced "snobbishness" when in the company of owners of (more) precious metal models/styles?
I have gotten comments, in certain company, to the effect of "Oh yeah that's a nice little watch you have there, I remember when I had my first Rolex and it was steel". These watches are usually on the age spotted wrist of one of the more "long in the tooth" members at my golf club by the way in terms of a demographic. |

I've never experienced it myself, but then I can't afford to join a golf club
Unfortunately some people will always be like that no matter what |

Its never happened to myself or the guys I know with all different models, I find it makes no difference what you've spent on a Rolex, its a Rolex and each model is unique and always starts a conversion between owners.
I had a YG DD wore it for 5 or so years and offloaded it and went to a SS Sub then off loaded that and have now settled again with my first Rolex my faithful old DJ, GMT is next but keeping my DJ :-)

I was in a local AD the other day, and the the salesman there, an older gentleman, who always wears a yellow gold DD actually accused me of wearing a fake Sub LV!
I'd been looking at a DSSD with a very nice woman who always helps me, when he walked over and asked if I might be interested in something a little smaller, and when to pull out the LV in his display case. I pulled up my sleeve to show him that I already owned one, and the rest of the conversation went like this: "Oh. Well, did you get all your papers when you bought that?" "Yes.." "It came with a box and a warranty?" "Yes." "Just checking, because it looks like a fake to me." "I assure you, it's just as real as your gold day date, sir." So then I (obviously) left. But I definitely think there's a big portion of the precious metal owners who are a little snobby like that. |

This, along with other posts by other members... y'all are picking up on the irony of slamming gold when you're pissed about a supposed bias for wearing what you like right? Pot, meet kettle. This 28 year young dude with no liver spots enjoys my TT Sub and YG DD. I'd never bash someone for wearing SS, and I'm rather suspect of how much flack one really catches for wearing a Rolex of any type. I never got any such comments about my Platty YM or Milgauss anyway.

When I was in a smaller AD in Toronto, I had a customer walk up to me and say "This guy gives the best deals, I've purchased 10 of my Rolexes from him" and as he said it, he snapped his wrist out while pulling back his sleeve, exposing the solid gold YM II in a manor JUST SHY of a back hand slap to my face, and just as quickly, he pulled his arm back and walked away... Without single word..
Different kind of "snobby-ness".. yes.. equally as "douche-baggy"... YES lol |

Stainless steel has to be the most popular in the sport models and in these models they hold their value the best. IMO.

Try wearing a Tudor! But I don't give a hoot in hell what others think so let 'em say what they will. It's satisfaction YOU get looking down at your wrist is all that matters.dP

Just say, I did not have a sun dial to put down on a partial trade so I went with the cheaper ss model.

I can't remember anyone noticing any Rolex I wore. And while I prefer two tone, those (who consider the "market") of us who buy these realize the resale is far inferior to the craze of the simpler SS. So, one could conclude, the SS buyers are wiser.
For what it is worth, I am always surprised at the posts regarding "noticing" a Rolex. Honestly, Rolex--while the very best in my opinion--does not draw nearly as many looks as other brands that employ mass produced ETA movements (with A LITTLE customizing) in larger cases such as 44MM or 47MM "special editions." |

You should have told him that it was a one off hand made platinum Sub, personally crafted by Hans Wilsdorf, resurrected specifically for the project .
Failing that you could just tell him to stick his five iron where the sun doesn't shine. |

I think that some of you are hanging with the wrong crowd.....
I don't have any friends who would be so crass or ignorant enough to utter such tasteless comments.....

I've known some SS Daytona owners to look down their noses at TT owners
One shouldn't pay too much attention to others. I remember once when my dog got in a scrap in the park, the other dogs owner was yelling at me "let me give you some advise!" I came back with "lady I only take advise from woman I sleep with" that soon shut her up |

That story is just proof that neither age nor gold wristwatches can buy you class.

Well I like the idea of a gold watch, but I honestly have never seen anyone under 60 wearing a gold rolex. My wife is even kinda down in tt, so I think that's just ignorant to be snobby against ss rolex. If you're into that game buy a patek! |

Nope, I have never heard such comments, or even had implications of such behavior. Most of my Rolexes are SS, with the exception of my TT Sub. Some of my friends and colleagues own gold Rolexes (DD or 18K Sub) and I have never heard any such comments.
