Dark and not detailed enough to really provide decent scrutiny. If it’s yours, can you make a better close-up?
If not yours, then the seller isn’t giving you very good photos. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

+1 you can hope for precised information with only one pic. You can’t say that you can’t get more photo from a rolex from the 60’s...nonsense...

The band and case are ding-less and pristine. I can’t tell if the hands and dial is right. The lume is also a bit wavy at 6.

Need more pics of dial and case in ambient light, as gilt are tough to tell unless seen at angles under light. Regarding dial, appears to be late gilt and these are known to have some wavy plots at 12,3,6 and 9.

Maybe this thread is a gag, but I'll answer seriously anyway. I would be very hesitant to give you an opinion on a watch like this based on one mediocre photo. If you have an opportunity to buy it, schedule a meeting with the owner and take lots of good photos from various angles in natural lighting, including between the lugs. If you can get photos of the inside, that would be great.

Dan, at what price point would you just fire off a PayPal payment. Id go $4,000 on this one pic alone

I hear you, 7:1 odds on that photo might be worth it. Especially since the OP had a chance to speak with the owner and ask questions.

I would ask for more photos. I was just goofing around to illustrate that it is hard to give advice without good evidence. Good luck man

It looks potentially very nice but it's easy to hide imperfections with gilts by taking pics at a certain angle. Puffy plots are what you want to see on these.

I would generally be more careful with gilt dials. In my day to day, I don't worry about wearing it, but more concerned if I bang it against a door knob! Sent from my SM-G781U1 using Tapatalk |

Puffy-plot gilt dials are a disaster waiting to happen. Feels like a game of pass-the-parcel if you own it when the lume inevitably crumbles. Mine just sits in the safe. Should really get rid of it (not an offer for sale, mods).

The puffy-lume gilt dials are beautiful, but the risk for crumbling really takes away from the utility of the watch. Mine typically sit in storage as well.

Is the watch for sale? If so, how much?

This. My Tudor Snowflake hands have been stabilized and they are indeed a little glossy under a loupe, but I prefer that to the risk of the lume dropping out when I hit it on a door after a spirited evening with a bottle of single malt.

With hands, it's best to stabilize them from the reverse side, IMO.

Yes, you're right. I believe that's what was done with mine, but whatever they applied for stabilization bled through to the front surface of the hand lume, making it slightly glossy. It was done way before I bought it. The gloss is only perceptible under a loupe, and I can bang this on as many door frames as I like.

Then it would give the appearance of a relume which is another issue value wise. I think leaving as is is best option. Thanks.

This is total BS. I purchased a 1966 Gilt #5513 from Jacek last year. I have worn and plan to wear it often. Putting these watches in a safe and being scared to wear them is stupid. I can not tell you how much pleasure I get from seeing the gilt gloss dial on my wrist in different natural lighting situations and angles. Now wearing it in a rainstorm is another matter. I live in So Cal...

Each person has their own level of risk tolerance. Hopefully it won't happen to you, and if it does, I hope you will take it in stride. But I can also understand that some people might feel a certain level of anxiety that would decrease their enjoyment of a watch if they feel that it is delicate. Sometimes I have a similar feeling about wearing a vintage watch that is in really pristine condition. I don't want to be the person that accidentally puts a ding or scratch on the case after 60 years of careful use. And yes, it probably does detract from my enjoyment of wearing the watch, and I wear it less often as a result.

This is my '65 gilt 5513 purchased several years ago, to give you an idea of what the dial looks like when the lume collapses. Only the 10 plot is still somewhat puffy, the rest have just enough residual lume to slightly glow briefly after illumination.
In this case it was in this condition when I bought it, and I paid accordingly. It is still a beautiful watch and I wear it regularly. |
