Wait on the Exp1 or grab a DJ now?

I have been on the waitlist for the exp1 for about a month. The AD was gracious to let me know about the few models I could purchase and among those are the white dial roman DJ 41 and a blue dial stick DJ41 both with fluted bezel on jubilee. There is also a white roman dial with smooth bezel on oyster.

I didnt consider the DJ before but after getting the news I did a little bit of research and the white fluted bezel one looks very appealing.

The question is do I wait and try to get an exp1 or another sports model or do I grab this DJ.
I never bought from this AD before or did I ever bought a new Rolex. Plan is to keep it for a long time.

I dont want to pay premium or buy used.

Is the DJ too dressy?
Does anyone wear it on any other straps, anything other than the jubilee, canvas or Erikas Originals strap for example?
Can it be a daily wearer and does it go with casual clothes?

My other 2 watches are smp and bb58.

Any real life pics are appreciated

DJ41 Blue fluted/jubilee is very sought after. If you like it jump on it. I did DJ41 blue fluted on oyster which I prefer as it’s a sportier looking bracelet for what I consider a sportier size at 41mm. However I also ordered a jubilee bracelet from the AD for the watch. Being able to mix it up is like having two watches. If you jump on this blue stick dj41 I think the explorer will soon follow at your AD. So in the end you’ll have a wonderful jubilee datejust and an oyster explorer I. Perfect combo! Just my $.02

u can order a different bracelet than what your watch came with directly from an AD? this is news to me! was there any special circumstance they made an exception for, or is this just common practice?

also - OP - i think u get the blue dial fluted jubilee DJ. i have it in a 36mm and love it, if u don't love it, u won't lose money on it and it'll add to your profile for getting the next explorer. but don't get it, knowing that u won't like it, because i'm sure a lot of other folks would actually want it to keep.

You can order a bracelet for your watch as long as it available like that. In this case the DJ comes with both, on the same reference.

Get what you WANT, not what is easily available. You’ll be glad in the long run.

I've been waiting for almost a year on an Explorer I. Obviously I'd say take since it's about to be discontinued. But if not, let me have it!

Thanks guys.
I think I ll wait for a few more months to see if I get offered something else.
Being that the sales person reached out to me after just about a month and offered me anything makes me feel good.
At list the waitlists are real. I was 1000% sure once I left the store they shredded my info.

White Roman fluted is great and I have a soft spot for it. Waiting for a exp1 is crazy, my ad just told me a year, last year I had one offered to me from same ad unsolicited.

This is my new daily with a 114060 for even more casual days

I’m waiting from October 2020 for explorer 1 , my AD said no one from September. I think it all most discounted.

Obviously no one's going to tell you that you made a wrong decision going with a DJ. But coming from experience, if you want the Explorer now, you're going to want it 6 months from now, even with a DJ strapped to your wrist. That's simply how it goes.

Yeah, the truth is I want a steel Rolex. Maybe sounds shallow but whatever lol.
Also I have not seen explorer in person but did try an airking which other than the dial and slimmer profile should be similar vibe.

At the end of the day, this hobby (if you want to call it that) is 99% emotional. You'll learn that there is no tricking yourself, and it ends up being more expensive with more headaches if you try. A DJ is every bit as good as an Exp1, but that's not what it's about. Only you can make the call!

I was in the same boat in deciding between a DJ41 and Explorer 1. Was offered the DJ first but decided to wait for the Explorer. Glad I did. I don't wear it everyday but do wear it a couple times a week. The Explorer is versatile and I like the background story from the first Everest summit. Plus I look forward to having an air, land, and sea collection. The Explorer fits nice in the land category.

Those look like 36mm DJ’s as opposed to 41. I would check...

Those are definitely 36mm. The blue 41 has small arabic numbers along the minute track.

I have both the DJ41 blue/fluted/jubilee and the Explorer. The DJ is, in my opinion, the more beautiful watch. But I actually get much more wear out of the Explorer. It is extremely comfortable, a great size, and flies under the radar (in a good way). It also can be dressed up or down, much more so than the DJ (which feels a bit too dressy for a casual day in my eyes, unless I’m dressing somewhat nicely). You can’t go wrong with either, and I say get both if you can — but if I could only keep one, it would be the Explorer.

The DJ is an awesome watch but is it the one you want. You didn't go into the AD looking for a DJ you went looking for an Explorer 1.

So the question you need to ask is which watch do I want to own?

An additional complication that you may want to consider is Rolex, as the Explorer is possibly getting an update this year Rolex may have reduced or even halted production to get the anticipated revamped model ready for launch in a few weeks time.

The key issue with any expensive purchase is to buy what you want not what someone else wants you to buy.

Good luck on your hunt for your watch.

The 41 mm DJ is a great and iconic watch. The blue dial with the fluted bezel and jubilee is a hot watch. What does it hurt to go try them on and see for yourself. The Explorer is due for an update and could be a long time coming depending on what happens on April the 7th with releases from Rolex. I prefer the Tudor Ranger to the Explorer and one can be had for a fraction of the cost but it does not have the Rolex logo on it. Good luck.

Based on your other watches, I would think the DJ would make a very nice addition. The problem I see is that the Exp I and DJ are very different pieces. Go with what you originally wanted otherwise that desire will not go away.

Wait on the Exp1 or grab a DJ now?

I appreciate everyone providing their perspective.
I am going to wait it out some more and try to get an exp1 or even an airking which is actually growing on me.

If they discontinue the exp1 I will just have to focus on another model.

Had the opportunity to actually see and try the airking.
It was used and way above retail as expected but thats why I didnt jump on it right away.

I have a Datejust with jubilee and fluted bezel that is 32 years old, and I have other watches and other Rolexes, and the Datejust is my daily watch and the one I wear the most.
If you like it. Buy it. The Datejust is the world's best-selling Rolex and the face of Rolex. There's a reason for that.

I think it's best to wait for the watch you want, but while I'm not so fond of the DJ41, any DJ is an excellent watch to own, even if the masses thumb their noses at it.

The Explorer was my third Rolex; had it been my first, it might have been my only Rolex. Good things come to those who wait.

As for the DJ, I must disagree with some other posters here - the DJ 41 is not an iconic watch, it is merely a modern update to the DateJust, the truly iconic model in the Rolex lineup.
