Collection update - thoughts on next steps

Hi all,

Sharing my collection & looking for thoughts / opinions on next steps.
I started looking at Rolex watches in 2016 but only got serious about contacting ADs in the second half of 2019. So I am quite new to the hobby and I am trying to balance between being content with what I have but also looking for that next piece.
I love the professional models and don’t mind to wear it in office.
I would like to add a Daytona and would not mind to complete a GMT trio with a SS BLRO, but I am not actively looking for it.

It’s a matter of personal taste, but still would like to hear your thoughts.

Agree. Or, a third option I’d propose: do nothing for the time being. That’s a lot of watches in a relatively short amount of time - enjoy them! See what aspects you like/dislike, and where your collection gaps are. It’s a marathon, not a race. I myself have set strict rules for when I can buy new watches, not a matter of cost, but rather to coincide with certain events/accomplishments. This way, each one is carefully curated and to prevent collection clutter.

Indeed, I went quite quickly down the rabbit hole.
Some of my watches are attached to an important events so there is an emotional connection there.
But I find myself constantly switching between ''slowing down/being content and that next piece''

Stellar collection, and I think this advice is spot on. Allowing some time to bond (or just as importantly not to bond) with new additions can be helpful. I know I personally have a tough time deviating from my daily and one “weekender”, but it took some time to figure that out. Slowing down has given me some perspective, and helps ensure changes are purposeful. To each their own though, I certainly have some envy of collections like yours regardless.

I also agree with Logo above... you’ve gotten a lot of watches in a short time. Slow down and enjoy what you have. I feel like another Rolex is just another Rolex for you at this point.

I am constantly on the fence - one day I am content and slowing down, the next day I am thinking about the next piece.
Visiting TRF several times a day certainly does not help in that sense.

Few years back I used to think that buying a Rolex is a monumental achievement, but it does not seem like that these days.

I think your collection looks excellent. There's a lot of bezel/color diversity there. You and I actually have very similar tastes, so I appreciate what you've acquired thus far in the journey.

Given your interest in the Daytona, you may consider adding one of the PM versions on OysterFlex. Your current collection is Oyster-heavy, so a solid "rubber" strap would add some additional diversity, and the dials on those Daytonas are second to none. Plus the case is completely different from the core Sub/GMT design that's in your collection right now. The other option is a Day-Date with a lighter color dial.

Re: Other brands ... I've tried it for the sake of trying it, but find that I keep selling the watches and focusing on my Rolex. I'm currently toying with the idea of a Tudor BB58 as a "beater" so that's something else you could consider. But my advise is to not stray from the brand just for the sake of adding something different.

I haven't seen any of the PM Oysterflex Daytonas in the flesh. Just from looking at the website, I narrowed it down to two models - YG, champagne dial, black subdials and RG, chocolate dial, black subdials.
Similar to the DD40 range, I have a couple of models which I like.
The thing with PM Daytona and DD is the emotional barrier of locking such amount of money in 1 watch. The Daytona also has rubber strap.
My most expensive purchase so far is TT CHNR which is less than half of that.
If I go down that road, I will probably part with one or two watches.

Outside of Rolex - I would like to add an AP.
If I get the call for 15450st blue and it is not small on my wrist, I will buy it in a heartbeat.

The nice thing about the PM models is that you can usually hunt down an AD who at least has one to show you. The OF Daytonas need to be seen and experienced on wrist. Don't knock the "rubber strap" until you've had an opportunity to see how comfortable it is (and to experience how the metal in the bracelet and the flanges on the skin-side make it more than a traditional rubber).

I picked up the WG model, but have to admit that I failed to really pay attention to RG before doing so; that RG/chocolate dial combo is amazing. It's probably why I went and purchased the Everose GMT after. ;)

Yeah, I was the same way. And still question my sanity every now and then even after buying the PM Daytona. But it really is that good. The nice thing about the PM Daytona in particular is that they seem to be holding strong on the secondary market, so relatively easy to get out of if you decide you want to try and it doesn't work out... Though I doubt that would happen once you have it on wrist.

I've never had an opportunity to handle either the 15500ST or 15450ST in person, but would do the same if one were offered. They're great looking pieces.

While you have quite an amazing collection, I find all 4 sports models you have wear similarly. Would going off brand be an option? If so, a few thoughts below, to broaden your overall collection:

1. A chronograph, such as the new Zenith Chronomaster or Omega Speedmaster
2. Something on leather strap, like something from JLC's Master Control line
3. Going even a bit more "classic": e.g. a classic style from Breguet
4. Leaving Switzerland completely and look at Grand Seiko. They have beautiful SS or titanium pieces that should fit your aesthetic taste.

While it's obvious you have a fondness for Rolex (I understand we all do to some degree on these forums), I personally would branch out and widen my collection to other amazing offerings. Though, obviously, if you know you won't wear anything other than a Rolex, then completely scratch my suggestions :)

Indeed, if you swap the bezel and dials, they are basically the same watches.
I can't deny that I like Rolex a lot.

I have asked my AD to let me know when the new Speedmaster is in store. I looked at the Speedy but did not like the bracelet. Actually from Omega, the one that I like the most so far is the Seamaster with rubber bracelet and black dial.

The leather strap watch which I like the most is Lange 1, ping gold and white dial. But that is probably for later stage in life.

I also agree with Logo above... you’ve gotten a lot of watches in a short time. Slow down and enjoy what you have. I feel like another Rolex is just another Rolex for you at this point.

Bloody hell for the short time you have been collecting that's an impressive haul.

Are you a strictly Rolex guy? I love my Couple of Rolex watches but have been drawn to the German brands recently. I unfortunately need to make some promotions at work in order to afford one, but it seems like you may already be in a financial position to!

Lange 1, pink gold, white dial is a stunning watch. But that is for later stage in life.

The dial on that watch is stunning. I recall seeing meteorite dial for the first time on a DD when I was picking up my BLNR.
There are so many nice watches on the Rolex catalogue but I need to keep things sensible in terms of finances.

You collection is completely mind-blowing.

Thank you, I got all my Rolexes from AD/Boutique (both AD and Boutique owned by the same person).

I love all of my timepieces but both SS Daytona and YG green dial Daytona are more special because they came directly from the owner of the boutique/AD.

From the beginning of last year, my SA told me that she won't be able to get me any Daytona within a year but last March the owner surprised me, he gave me the chance to get SS Daytona and in December gave me another chance to get YG green dial Daytona. I think I am very lucky with Rolex.

Hope you can get all your timepieces from your AD at msrp. Your collection is awesome too.

I have seen and tried the white dial SS at a grey dealer only. It is indeed a special watch. The YG green dial is destined to be a classic one day.

I had to go to three different ADs in three different countries to get my watches. And if I call them tomorrow and ask them for a Daytona, they will all tell me NO.

You have surely found the right AD and the right strategy to build upon.

Fantastic collection and I must add one that I aspire to. I have the sub, root beer and datejust exactly as you have it. I am looking to add the Daytona as well, white dial ceramic. I am considering the blnr - wasn’t sure as it is a blend of my datejust and sub, but see it fits well in your collection. I won’t pay the crazy hulk prices but on the list for the new LV. One suggestion - consider the new bluesy. I actually had it, loved it, but felt with a small collection it was too much blue and subs. Now that I have the root beer I want it back because it adds the yellow gold to my collection. So I would recommend bluesy as we have very similar tastes it appears!

Btw I get the all Rolex. I had Omega, JLC and Breitling. None sung to me like Rolex. I do have a white dial black strap NOMOS, just a simple watch when it calls for extra conservative dress, but otherwise only Rolex for me moving forward.

Indeed, our collection are quite similar. The Sub and the DJ were my first watches and I remember seeing your photo of the two when I started checking TRF.
I like the Bluesy as well. I spent 30 mins at the AD switching between the Rootbeer and the Bluesy before I decided I want to order the Rootbeer.

Nice really great to hear I was some help with the start of your collection! I have added and subtracted since then, I overthink my purchases and only trying to add now. If I had to, I would keep only the sub and blue datejust, I can’t think of a better combo. So we are building the same from those two. I want the white Daytona, but will add the bluesy later this year, and would add sub date LV and Batman. I also have looked at full PM subs, but don’t like to tie that much up in one watch...yet.

I am so picky with watch brands and the only Rolex I like are sub, datejust, gmt and Daytona. I have looked into the OP41 and only the green because I want some green in my collection.

What I really want to see first is that comes out in April. If there are more green options think I would be very interested. As per AP, not in person. Will take a look based on your suggestion though - thanks!

Adding a watch with a chrono complication would round things out nicely. You've already mentioned the Daytona as an option. If you want to get that any time soon, then going TT might be an option if you like the TT look. If you're interested in looking beyond Rolex, then the Omega Speedmaster is an excellent option. I never really liked the styling of the Daytona, so I have the Speedmaster as my classic chrono.

In the Rolex category of course consider a Daytona or DD... but I think you should consider adding another brand into the mix.

As for other brands outside Rolex - I should have probably mentioned that I asked my AD to let me know when the new Speedmaster is in the store, and I have also reached out to an AP Boutique for 15450st blue dial.
