IWC Spitfire 39mm. SS or Bronze Case?

I am liking the IWC Automatic Spitfire 39mm on the brown leather strap.

Cannot decide whether I prefer the stainless steel case with black dial or the bronze with green dial. Does anyone have either, and what would other members prefer? Thanks in advance.

I don't own either but I got a Mark XV in 2001 which is still with me. I'd go again for steel and black dial - after all it is a tool watch. Bronze is a fad in my eyes, doesn't look as clean and is less robust. If you prefer the look though go for it, I don't.

I have a version in the bronze. If you like vintage style then I can recommend it.

I own and love the Spitfire auto -- ended up choosing the steel over the bronze, but could have gone the other way. Great piece, beautifully-made case and handset, and mine has been rock-solid over the year and a half I've owned it, running at around +1pd or better and lasting well over the stated 72 hours on a wind. It's one of my go-tos on the wards.

All in all a great, under-the-radar tool watch. There are some pics of the bronze version with a bit of age -- for me it was down to the dial and the sheen I found in the steel version. Happy hunting,

s

IWC Spitfire 39mm. SS or Bronze Case?

I think it depends on what else is in your collection. I personally love the bronze version with the green dial.

i have the bronze one. love the green dial and bronze combo, but in a way i do find it a bit of a fad. sometimes i wish i got the regular steel one, but i'm still happy with it. traded in a petit prince xviii for it and i think the changes with the smaller numerals and slightly smaller case make it look more balanced.

Thanks all, these comments are really helpful. I am certainly going to take the plunge as I like the case size (although read the lug to lug is 50mm?). I think I am slightly edging towards stainless steel (on the brown leather strap). Wish I could get to an AD to look at both in real time. Hopefully restrictions will lift soon here in the UK.

Congrats in advance! I would personally wait until waw and see the Iwc novelty before I pull the trigger tho. 2021 is the year of pilot watches for them so there might be a mark 19 with in house movement.

I don't find the lug length a problem at all on my sub-7" wrist. The Spitfire wears very comfortably and securely, and I suspect the L2L is part of that. And while I also own a Mk XVIII LPP, it's the Spitfire that I find more balanced and striking.

I like bronze, but I don’t understand its use in a pilots watch.

I recently picked up the SS version on the green Nato, then ordered the brown calfskin strap and buckle. Absolutely love it!
