Trading YM40 and SD43 for YM42

Hi All - I have a new YM40 Slate (dark rhodium) and an SD43 Mark 1 dial. I like both, but thinking of trading them for a YM42 and just have one main watch (other than a couple of more basic watches). Any thoughts?

YM40 wears on small side for men though otherwise is a really nice watch. SD43 is more 'man size' but some complain about the height and fit.

YM42 you get the slimness, the width, you get the Glidelock of the SD43 too plus a gold case and rather cool bezel and strap. As a one-watch watch it's got loads going for it.

Downside is the look is a bit austere and maybe not showy enough for some (for the price tag). It's also a bit cutting edge for Rolex and the traditional Sub and SD-lovers would never get such a decision.

What do you think (OP) about it?

The SD43 is the quintessential Rolex. It was my first and if I had to scale my collection down to one single watch, the SD would be it.

The SD 16600 and YM 16622 were my favourite Rolex watches when I was a teenager and a young adult.

When I finally got the 116622, it was my first Rolex. Although I love it, I've always found it a tad small on my 18cm/7in wrist. Being of a dressy nature, it could get away with it but I would love Rolex to make a steel YM42, ideally.

The SD43 is a great size and the closest thing to perfection to me when it comes to a badass diver. It's my absolute favourite diver in fact.

The WG YM42 is a curious animal. Great case, size and clasp but disappointing dial and bezel to the point it fails to reach its full potential IMHO. With the right dial and bezel, it could have been a terrific watch, either in steel or in gold.

Still, my ideal full gold YM42 would have not been enough to swap both the YM40 and the SD43, no way.

If you love the YM42, then I’d do it. There’s something to be said for being a one watch guy. If you’re just trying to consolidate and like the idea of being a one watch guy more than actually liking the YM42, then I’d keep what you have and wait for something different to come along. All three are killer watches though

In my opinion...

The SD43 is a bad ass, big brother to the Sub, a real mans man watch. Fit & size are perfection imo

The YM40 comes across as more casual, maybe more youthful (younger persons) pick- I kind of see it as a wealthy family graduation type gift.

The YM42 is also a bad ass men’s watch. And twice the price of the others w the white gold. More rare for sure.

I’d go for the trade, just bc the YM40 is kind of lost in the range. Would be a tougher decision to me if you had the SD43 and a dress watch, like blue faced DJ41.

All that said, putting a rubber strap on the SD43 might do the trick for you...

Thanks all - great comments. I also considered selling SD43 and getting GMT Batman jubilee (or even Cellini white gold to have a real dress watch). Just not sure if two divers makes sense.... bought them so I must like both.... I love seeing someone else with same collection! I hate to say it - may need three ;-( I was only planning to own one!

That would also be a mistake. The Batgirl is nice but not worth selling the SD to get. My opinion, that SD should be in the #1 slot in your box and stay there.

I used to be a one-watch-man but when that watch needed to go to service I missed the hell of it. Now I have two mechanical watches that I enjoy way more. In your case you got 2 magnificent pieces, one of them may become discontinued “SD43”.
I wound trade the YM 40 for the 42 and pay difference. The SD43 should stay, a masterpiece.

I had one watch when mine first went for a service a few years ago, life soon got very complicated

I don't think you should do this trade and echo others thoughts about keeping the sd43

I have a ym 42 and it is my favorite watch, easily. Super comfortable, great weight with WG case and clasp, truly a unique looking model. Very versatile and understated. I would support the trade, but you also have two awesome watches now. I just can’t recommend the YM 42 enough.

I really like my SD43 more of a go to watch for me but you need to do what is best for you. Personally I would not do it.

I’ve been down this route; sold an SD43....great watch....and bought the 42 as my only mechanical watch. That was a year ago and I haven’t regretted it for a single second.I’m always amused by the suggestion it’s not ‘obvious’ enough. That’s the whole design point, it’s a stealth watch.
You could wear it a lifetime without a single person ever knowing. I like that. But it will never sell in big numbers....not ‘showy’ enough.

I could see a trade just not for the YM42. I like the watch but think it is overvalued for what it is on a rubber strap. For the money required you are in pre-owned six digit PM Submariner range. The SD43 is a great watch and I would not move that but I could see selling/trading the YM and picking up the BLNR that you want. The SD43 and the BLNR would be a nice combination.

This is a great point. I will never sell my SD43. If I can't add, I will stand pat. I would rather add an Omega. World Timer on rubber then part with my 43.
