A little insight please

Hey everyone, I currently do not own nor have I ever had a Panerai. But my friend ( also a AD) has a passion for a number of brands - Panerai in piticular. Which has now infected me and has sparked a real intrest in the brand. I could wear a 40-42 mm and have no intrest in anything larger. My question is, what are the differences in the movements? Which models could I swim/ dive in? I am not to familiar with there differences in series so any help would be appreciated. Also I am looking to buy new if that matters.

Can you elaborate on this?

If you're truly interested in Panerai, you wouldn't be interested in 40-42mm models as the brand historically offers 44-47mm watches. The 40-42mm watches are a step away from the brand's DNA.

Are you worried that a 44-47mm watch is too big for your wrist? If so, I wouldn't worry about that. I have a 6.0 inch wrist and I wear two 47mm Panerai's without issue:

Well, there you go. I said I didn't know much! I wasn't kidding. Go to know. Thanks I do appreciate the statement. That opens up a lot of doors because I could find lots of 44 mm and very few mm. Now I know why. Is one movement better that another in the panerai line up? Is there a place to get information about there movements?

I wouldn’t get too wrapped up in 40 vs 42 vs 44. Lug to lug distance, lug shape, dial clutter (or lack thereof) and DNA are just as, if not more, important than diameter, IMO.

Agreed!

Go with what fits your wrist and what you are most comfortable with. Don’t get wrapped up in the brainwashing to avoid 40-42mm case sizes.

Pam 44 and 47 wear quite differently from other watchmakers if they made 44/47.

Even 47mm Pam radiomir with lug wires might wear smaller than maybe 44mm Pam due to lack of big lugs.

Still, u need to try on these two sizes before u can decide on what to do next.

Panerai basically breaks down to three popular main models, not counting due, Ferrari, etc

Luminor, radiomir and submersible

And then a breaks down into so many different variations, hard to list all
-Second hands, date, sandwich dial, casing, auto mvmt, and the options go on and on.

Most wear differently, so try on as many as possible.

Due is fine, if it fits u better.
But if u can wear 42 breitling navi, u can wear panerai 44/47 imo.

With the indulgence of the OP, what current models has the most “inky” black dial, no sunburst dial?

Thanks.

I settled on the 42mm 1950 PAM 722 with a bracelet. Absolutely love the watch and it's 9010 movement. Very comfortable to boot. I had no idea what I was missing not having a Panerai.

If you’re looking for your first Panerai then the Opx movement 111 is a staple classic that you won’t ever lose money on.
