Rolex Explorer 124270 vs 214270 (Live Picture)

Here’s a great photo of the last gen Explorer with the new. I have no issue with the 39mm size. Just think it could’ve been executed a little better. Looks a bit bloated. The 36 looks like it has a 19mm bracelet?? I have my name down at 3 AD’s for the new 36mm. Fingers crossed.
Which do you prefer?

Both look great ...

If I was given the choice today at an AD, I'd probably pick the 39mm because to me 39-40mm is the sweet spot in terms of size. I'm not against 36mm, infact I've been close to buying a DJ36 for last couple of years but that is for completely different reasons. I prefer the 'bling' in a smaller size but sports slightly larger.

(Disclaimer ; I do have the current Explorer)

36mm for those with small wrists is my only thoughts. 39mm for me all day.

+1

I also like the text layout better on the 39mm.

Both look great, but if youve got issues wearing any 36mm watch, the 36mm ain’t gonna do you any favours....36mm is 36 mm
I love the look of both they are stunning but 36mm watches don’t work for me so it’s 39mm for me

My Explorer 36mm 114270's hands are identical in length. The minute hand is the same length as the outer edge of the indices.

No, I think the hands are the perfect length. The second hand extends to the minute markers and the minute hand extends to the end of the lume pots. I think extending the minute hand to the minute markers would be too long.

Regardless, the situation before was that the watch was increased in size, but the same minute hands were used which made them 3mm too short. We have the opposite situation here. The watch is being made smaller, so obviously the hands of the previous watch aren't being used.

just wish they'd remove the spacing between the letters on R O L E X, so that it looks more proportionate to the dial------R O L E X vs ROLEX ---

and the "explorer" text at 6'o clock instead.

three lines at top is just too cluttered

I mean, its not a cheap watch per se. At least have the decency of adjusting and paying attention to small details that matters.

i own the 114270 and the 214270. and i will purchase the 36 124270. just wish they can address this small but important issue for it starts rolling out.

The dial is too large on the 39mm. The proportions are much better on the 36mm.

The Explorer text should be at the top I think, just as the original Explorer, and it is more balanced this way too, the EXPLORER at 6 o clock looks missed there. I think they used it at this position just to shadow how large the 39mm dial is.

“Bloated”. Did someone put out an email telling everyone to use that word? I have some gshocks, and a few Seikos, that are definitely ”bloated”. Heck, calling the Fatboy “bloated” could be a legitimate argument.

The 39mm Exp? No.

It does look a bit bloated by comparison if you're someone who prefers the 36 size. On the other hand, I can see how the 36 may look 'cramped' for someone who likes the 39.

They're both great looking watches.

Without a doubt, I prefer the 39mm. 36mm is way too small.

214270 is one of the greatest rolex models of all time.

Call me crazy, but I felt the 214270 wore larger than my 114060. If given the choice, I would definitely take the 124270, which would be complimentary to the Sub. I'm in the camp that feels the dial real estate of the 214270 makes it wear too large, despite the midcase size.

If I were building the perfect Explorer it would be somewhere around 37.5-38mm. Given the choices available, neither are perfect. However for me the 39 is much closer to perfect than the 36. One of the things I love the most about my 39 is the matte dial, which is now sadly taken off of the table with the new 36.

This 36 with the new lugs and refined cases will wear like a 38.

Having personally tried on 36mm Rolexes in ADs multiple times, I very seriously doubt this. Given that the lugs have been slimmed down, I expect them to wear even smaller than the previous generation of 36mm OPs.

If someone prefers the 36, great. But let’s not create false narratives to try to paint the watch as something it’s not going to be.

Good analysis. I have a 39 but put my name in to add the 36. But I like vintage Explorers so I’m ok with the 36 size as well.
