Rolex Daytona as a possible investment

I've always loved the Rolex black face Daytona.

Im thinking of buying one to hopefully use on very special occasions, and keep as a possible investment.

Anyone done a similar thing?

There is a considerable waiting list at present, what concerns me is if "after i hopefully" buy the watch is "if" i need to sell in 3, 4, 5 years time what the valve would be, appreciate its all about conditions etc but if it was A1 condition would it be worth the same, less, or maybe even more??

I like the Daytona the best, but are there other Rolex's which hold or go up in value?(better than the Daytona)

Many thanks
Marcus

When do you plan to sell it?

How much do you expect to return on your capital?

What other uses do you have for your capital?

You are going to get a lot of heat for this topic. But I guess it’s a valid question since the secondary market prices are approximately 3x the MSRP.

The fact of the matter is that you will only make money when you buy the Daytona at MSRP. If you are buying it from grey dealers, before you even earn a dime you have already loss 5-10% of the value you paid. It’s even worse if you buy a BNIB version because the moment you take the stickers off, it’s 1k off the selling price. You size the bracelet, it’s another 1k off the selling price. Greys are not going to pay you 35k for the watch you have worn on occasion. The black dial is +/-35k now but you are 200% not going to get that when you have worn it. Even BNIB versions don’t fetch that money.

So assuming you bought the black dial Daytona at 35k now. The moment you walk out of the door, you are at least 5k poorer before you enter the shop. Is that a good investment?

On the other hand, to get the Daytona at MSRP... you gonna be buying other stuffs before reaching that grail piece... so you will break even or come out slightly ahead eventually.

The only right answer to both of these questions - nobody knows. The SS craze started around 2016, so 5 years ago. Will it die in 5 years? Nobody knows. What watches will be hot in 5 years? Nobody knows.

My simple rule - if I can’t afford to write the money off totally I can’t afford it period. Watches aren’t investments (in my opinion) - I have dedicated vehicles for that.

Welcome to the forum. OP, word of advice... do a quick search on the forum to look for an answer to your question before starting a thread. And yes, this has been discussed MANY times before on here.

It's not about helping, your thoughts are impossible for anybody to forecast. We discuss watches, you want to discuss Investments, whatever that means to you.

Today people still don't recover their initial "investment" in the green glass Milgauss. Speculation and investment aren't always the same thing.

Rolex has always returned good value when bought at MSRP. Paying an exorbitantly high premium, and expecting something to continue in that direction indefinitely may not be the wisest financial decision.

You might make money only if you buy at msrp.

Yes. You can also do this with 57xx Patek series watches. The only issue with your plan is you can't get one which sort of throws a wrench in the whole thing.
