Rolex Panda

Hi,

I'm a complete noob when it comes to watch collecting, but I really like the look of the 116500ln panda with a white dial. I see a bunch of people selling on this site for between 32-36k, but they want bank wire, which provides no buyer protection. Am I better off buying on eBay, where they independentluy verify the watch is real? I've also been following the Timepiece Gentleman, but they're selling the same watch for $40k, which doesn't make sense to me, but at least I'll know the watch is real.

Any advice?

DavidSW will sell you a perfect watch and you'll have it at your home tomorrow. And the 500LN isn't a true panda.

are you looking for brand new or preowned is ok? Takuya has one for sale right now, 2021, unpolished excellent condition. He's my go-to.

no - don't buy it from ebay. buy it from a trusted reseller like david (mentioned above and one of the best for sure) or one of the other trusted resellers who advertise and post on this site. and since you self identify as a complete noob, just make sure you're aware that this is a $13,000 watch that sells for the prices you quote because it's essentially impossible to obtain from a rolex AD at msrp. (i didn't want to take for granted that you actually knew that.)

anyway, go with a trusted and well-referenced reseller, and expect to wire the money, and you can have the watch on your wrist tomorrow.

Just remember that if you go out and buy an unworn White DaytonaC for $38k, once you size it and wear it, the market bid from the dealers is going to be like $10k lower.

Once I realized that is the reality of going grey on the Ceramic Daytona I sort of lost interest, given that the $10k drop in value is creeping on the full retail value of the watch!

Yes, buy a different watch. Look at the new Zenith Chrono, navitimer, and speedmaster. For the daytona you are spending 13k for the watch, and another 25k for simply hype. The movement, case, and all parts. The difference folks between the MSRP and gray price=hype. So that extra money is not actually going to the watch. Keep that in mind.

But the hype is what makes many of these watches valuable. It's all marketing, right? It's not like a Rolex tells time 100x better than a $100 Casio. Yes, 38k is expensive, but if it can be sold for the same price or more in a couple years, isn't that worth it vs buying a random, cheaper rolex that won't go up in value?

Research sellers here, such as those above, who do lots of transactions and thus have no incentive to ruin their rep on this forum for a few bucks, rather they will go the extra mile to see you right, one of the main advantages of this forum.

OP, also be very careful with what you call the watch. Panda patrol out in full force and they get aggressive if you deviate from the names they consider appropriate.

Good grief, the only "correct" Panda is the cute and fuzzy one munching bamboo.

We can call these watches whatever we want. It’s the NEW Panda! And I’d recommend DavidSW as the best.

Big NOOOO to ebay. The 5 or 6 sellers on this forum is where to buy. Yes you will pay a bit more but still EASY choice.

I am completely fine with pre owned. Some of you are saying the white dial is overpriced and that a dealer will later offer $10k below what I pay now. But why would I need a dealer to sell? I can just out it on eBay and get market value.

In terms of best looking pre owned rolex watches that aren't significantly overpriced, what are the favorites out there? I am not interested in a submarine. I just love the look of black bezel and white dial.

What's wrong with ebay? They authenticate and you can also pay an AD to do the same. Looking at the dealers on here, their prices are up to 10% more than ebay.

What's wrong with them is that you don't know the people you're dealing with. Trusted sellers here you don't know, either, but a lot of people on TRF do and have built their reputation. That's why they are trusted here. And your first lesson is: Buy the seller.

Btw, not interested in a submarine myself, either. Wouldn't know even where to park the damn thing. (No offense. I just had to.)

Cheers
Marc

It could end up being fine but not worth the risk .. I’ve got a big collection of all the hyped up watches but they were all bought brand new from my AD at the retail price .. however, if I was not in this unique position and I could justify spending what you are for this watch - I would definitely listen to what most are saying on here and go with davidsw and just can be confident it’s all good to go. Davidsw has been around a long while and can be trusted

But anyway just a separate piece of advice, there’s a good chance you’ll end up loving the watch once you have found one to buy - and I can almost certainly say you’ll want more Rolex watches after, so start by going to an AD you like nearby where you live and tell them what you’re interested in.. you never know, can’t hurt (obviously you wouldn’t be able to get the Daytona from them but I think you know that already)

At least for me personally, until someone has become a lot more knowledgeable about watches I would avoid eBay. Pay the premium for a trusted seller that you don't need to worry about, especially when you're paying that much money for a single item.

I second everyone here, just be careful buying from ebay, esp. on big purchases. Buy the seller - DavidSW or other trusted sellers here are the way to go if you can’t get one from AD.

You can always sell your watches later on ebay, but the cut that ebay gets will make you cringe.

Too much over MSRP by a mile for me, but maybe not for you. I'm usually not in with the watch name snobs, but I'm one of them in this case. Panda is a well established name and this is not one of them. No offense meant OP. And yes, go with a trusted seller. DavidSW is risk free as well as many others.

Lots of sour grapes in this one thread. OP buy what you like, you can find plenty of reputable dealers that will sell one to you in low 30s
