Empty Cases, Getting Crazy Out There

So I went to pickup 31mm TT today, AD said come early we just restock. Hit the AD as soon as shop was opened, they had 50 new watches. Only sports was TT daytona champagne, batgirl, sub no date, TT skyD. Still none of 2021 stuffs & not a single daydate.

Here’s the kicker, the only men’s watch unsold & available for display is a single TT DJ41. The rest have been sold before post / display. Next batch comes in 3 weeks, they have 200 displays for rolex and only 1/4 were filled (most are the really unpopular 28mm stuffs).

Unbelievable, they only have 1 men’s watch to sell for the next 3 weeks.

Unbelievable that they have one men's watch to sell in 3 weeks. Where did they slip up? I thought everything was sold in advance. Is the "bubble" finally deflating?

This is seriously crazy. I went to my local AD who has a display for Rolex watches(sells jewelry also) that is for about 60 watches. They had out for sale on the floor one lady's 31mm Datejust two tone in a weird configuration and one Cellini Moonphase. The rest of the cases were all empty, blank place cushions. Looked like a store that was closing for business and had a blowout sale. All that was missing was the colorful signs claiming closing sales or whatever.
I don't know where this is going but this isn't a business model that can be sustained, Rolex is going somewhere with this, not sure where though.

Rolex don't have anywhere to go with this. Having gone past the point of selling everything they make to selling what they make multiple times over, they have a business model which prints money and their ADs are also raking it in.

You have to buy that mirror beside it to get the vase.

Sure Sir. There’s a 2 year waiting list for that but in the meantime would you like a used flower pot?

I don't believe the flower pot was an option with your model watch, so we're not allowed to sell it to you.

I think the safe is packed full of watches. I don’t believe the AD is getting less watches from Rolex. They’re just putting out less to create the illusion of scarcity.

Unfortunately not the case; friend works there and nothing hidden in the back! They do sell many other brands including Tudor, Brietling, etc and those displays have many pieces

Wrong. Watches are sold before they hit the store. This is well beyond "look of scarcity", as if the AD needs to get the point across. People know what is going on right now. There is no illusion.

If true, would explain a lot. Unfortunately it boils down to short supply and an almost insatiable worldwide demand.

People wouldn’t want them if everything was so readily available. A brand can’t be exclusive if anyone off the street can buy the hottest item at retail.

I was by my AD last weekend. Nothing in the case. I asked him about it and he told me that they have about 10 in the vault. They don't put the only watches they have on display to avoid unnecessary handling. But if someone's interested, then they will present that particular model to a customer they think is willing to buy. They had a GMT, SUB, Sub date and 41DJ'S in stock. All received last week.
Interesting concept I think. Non serious buyers may just look at the empty case and leave. He told me if the feel the prospective buyer is not wanting the piece for them selves, then they play the "this piece is spoken for" card. But he also said, despite the internet rumors, that sales have slowed. Last year they were begging for new watches. Not so much anymore.

Sadly this isn’t the case. Well, at least it isn’t here in South Florida. I have visited numerous ADs, and I always ask if they have any pieces in the safe. I always have a Rolex on my risk too. I am always told that there are not watches in the safe either.

Hey Steve! Long time!

I agree. My AD have stuff in the safe but nothing for sale. They will show me all kinds of hot models as we all rare diamond crusted stuff, but it’s all spoken for.

Ha ha. Exactly! It's pure Kool Aid guzzling when people say otherwise. In my opinion, when people say crazy stuff like that they are either trying to convince themselves of a made up rhetoric out of fear that their own watches might somehow lose value, or they are new to the brand and forum and just don't know what it was like. Rolex built a brand and image for decades. Literally generations. This very recent anomaly isn't what suddenly "made" the brand.
