Milgauss, scratch magnet?

Hey guys.

Owned my milgauss for about 3 weeks now as a daily. I can’t believe how easy the mirror polished bits get scratched just by wearing it!

Does anyone else have one that has acquired a million scratches on the polished bits?

Let’s see some pics!

Mmhmm. Plenty of scratches.

You will focus on it initially but eventually you come to realize that you’re going to accumulate scratches unless you leave it in a glass box in the safe

Will add photos for you later

My first time actually wearing a predominantly polished surface Rolex. Anxiety central!

By the way. I recall but cannot find someone who sent in a black dial GV Milgauss to get fully brushed by a 3rd party. I think it was done by LAWW and it looked really good but myself prefer the added depth perception of mix polish and brushed surfaces.

I would only consider this route if you still can’t handle the polished surfaces after you have worn the watch for a while and have decided to keep it.

It’s definitely a scratch magnet.

I’m the type that will wear my watches typically without too much concern for scratches, but I have to admit the Milgauss seems to scratch just by looking at it. After a couple weeks I got over it though and am back to normal.

That's because fingerprints are a mix of oil + tiny particles.

Never ever just wipe a watch dry. It would be like taking a cloth and start polishing a dirty car without washing it first.

Ouch,
Never wipe with a shirt. Only a clean Micro Fiber.
These are highly polished

Ahh the old Milgauss scratch, as others have said it scratches just looking at it. If you have a loupe you can even see new scratches appear as you gently breathe on it.

On a positive note though, eventually all the tiny scratches add together to make a lovely finish that looks great in the sun. You just need to give it some time, and tens of thousands of those tiny hairlines. My advice wear long sleeve shirts, and you’ll get there in no time.

Milgauss, scratch magnet?

I wear mine in rotation and I've recently placed it on a rubber strap; I've had it for a while with no significant scratches. I'm pretty careful but not that careful. Here's today's photo!! Maybe it worse on the blue dial ones!!! BTW, are you sure it's got the stickers off?

I've been lucky with my Milgauss since new, may '18 and all of mine besides the usual hairlines except for one scratch on my Blnr case side at 10 which I know will not polish out. Thanks for the Tshirt reminder that can be a hard habit to break.

My Explorer 1 is 4 weeks old and looks far worse. High polished (and even brushed) shows scratches. Rolex uses 904L which is highly corrosion resistant but scratches fairly easy. The scratches mean you are wearing (and enjoying) it. Patina.

My Explorer 2 is really scratched up - lot of adventures with that bad boy! I will never polish it.

Amen!

I don’t usually worry about scratches.

My BLRO that I wore as a daily for 2 years has dents knicks and scratches everywhere.

But def more noticeable on highly polished watches

High polish shows even extremely light scratches. You could probably easily remove that with a Sunshine Cloth and 5 minutes. A member on this forum turned me on to it and it's an outstanding product for polished surfaces.

Rather ridiculous that Rolex has a watch that scratches so darn easily. The fact that a cotton t shirt or something can scratch it so easily is absurd for the money we are paying. Rolex used to sell tool watches. Now we all need kid gloves in bubble wrap without going outside or touching it to use.

I’m not entirely sure what you mean. It’s extremely unlikely that a plain, clean cotton shirt scratched the watch, more likely there was some microscopic dust, hair, dirt etc that contributed to the abrasion. It’s 904L steel, if you look up the mechanical properties of this alloy it’s not a joke and has higher corrosion resistance than the old steel models, making the new ones more likely to hold up over time. It’s tough, but obviously this isn’t diamond level strength. Rolex has 18k gold watches that are about half the modulus of elasticity and half the hardness of the steel ones and hold up just fine through daily wear.

Scratches suck, but they are a part of life and it’s really not to do with Rolex offering a poor material. A 400k Lamborghini scratches just the same as a 20k Volkswagen, just hurts more on the Lamborghini, but part of ownership. Unless you want to give your watch the full 3M wrap treatment lol

To the OP - sorry to hear about the scratches. But they blend in over time, and a light touch up at RSC will have it looking brand new should you so choose in a few years.

The Milgauss repulses magnets but itself is a magnet to scratches. Yin and yang. ;-)

If you frequent in an environment with suspended abrasive particles, such as construction sites, bulk cargo terminals etc. or areas nearby, it's best if you don't wipe any polished surface of your watch by any means. This includes a shirt. Same applies to your vehicle..

Once I fell down on my brick patio and got deep scratches on my SubC's band, none of the fine scratches on the polished surfaces bothered me at all.

It's a very expensive tool, and I expect it to show it's history. The sapphire crystal has also got a couple of small scratches which I'm sure Rolex Service will want to replace in 5 or 6 years.

Sctatch magnet? Yes, some care, others not.

The Milgauss would be a 'perfect' watch w/o the highly polished insert and lugs surfaces, imho.

I agree.

If it were slightly slimmer and less shiny I'd get one.
Always cool servicing one though, seeing the case within the case

Any 904L watch with polished lugs, bezel and PCLs is going to be a total scratch magnet.

It's highly polished. Of course it's going to get scratched. My wife's Z-Blue, which used to be mine, is neither pampered nor abused. It still flashes and twinkles at the slightest opportunity. But it is scratched all over - if you look close enough. That's because it's highly polished.

I notice scratches on my explorer more as the satin finish shows scratches and scuffs as shiny swirls etc. My Milgauss has developed a kind of scratch patina that even enhances the highly polished finish- looks spectacular.
If you’re trying to keep any watch in pristine condition then don’t wear it.

Would love to see a photo!

I don’t rlly care much about the scratches. My 126710BLRO which is valued much higher is beat to all hell and it doesn’t bother me.

I think purchasing this watch brand new and seeing it for the first couple days in pristine mirror finished glory, just to have it all scuffed a week later hurts a bit but I’ll get over it
