On vacation I saw a ton of Rolexes but only one still rules them all

Just got back from a week long Turks and Caicos vacation and saw more Rolexes in the wild than I have seen in the previous 18 months.

Saw steel Daytonas, Ceramic Daytonas, 2 tone Daytonas, 6 digit subs galore (everyone and their dog had one), Datejusts, yachtmasters, OPs and a handful of Sea Dwellers.

A lot of people looked like their 6 digit subs were wearing them. Way too big on their wrists and extremely blingy.

Only one watch really blew me away because it looked so perfect…it was the old, humble king, the 16610…It just looked like an amazing watch rather than an amazing piece of jewelry that also happens to be a watch

To the 16610. Long live the king!!!

Something to be said about 5 digit references.

I get that feeling, living and working in the Central London I see so many of the modern 6 digit "hot" references that I've become "desensitised" by them.
It's often the rarer 5 and 4 digits that usually make me double take.

My thoughts exactly. From a couple feet away, the watches basically look the same.

Cool story bro, only one thing worse than a watch that wears its owner - someone getting annoyed about a watch wearing its owner.

A bunch of five digits are on sale lately in the for sale section. Great deals available for much less than 11/12 series models.
I prefer the newer stuff personally and the market has shifted towards this as well, but I wouldn’t mind a nice five digit SD 16600. It’s the watch I regret selling the most and it was my first Rolex.

Sounds like a nice vacation. I like seeing watches on owners wrists who are out and about. I like them all, 6 digit/5 digit you name it.

This is the first time I heard about a submariner 40mm being big and blingy. Hmm. Unless.....these rich folks passed down the 6 digit subs to their 12 yr olds and the resort was stacked with 12 yr old kids wearing 6 digit subs. Cool

OP...such an amazing story...if you don't mind, do you still have that timepiece that you're beautiful cat is wearing, the all stainless steel 6-digit reference?

Yes or no, be honest please.

"Humble king", I like that! I also prefer the older 5-digits (my everyday is a 14060), but I´d have a hard time telling the difference on someone's wrist unless I got really close to them...

I love the 16610 but wouldn’t trade my 126610 for it. Mine is not jewelry. It’s not the watch, its the owner and how they wear it.
