Need advice on 1991 DayDate
I have a 1991 daydate that I wore on and off for about 3 years. Then I got other watches and into the safe it went and was forgotten. Now 30 years later I want to wear it.
When I picked it up and tried it on it started to work...second hand started right up just from moving the watch. No winding required. The question I have, should I just start to wear or should I have it serviced before wearing? |

How's the winding? Nice and smooth, grainy? Could you time the watch for 24 hrs to see how well the movement is keeping time? If you don't have a timegrapher, you could use some form of official time keeping tool like time.is

Winding is smooth. I will do a 24 time test.

Some would say just run it till it stops working, then do a service. The issue is it may be running well but the pieces that seal out moisture and dust may have broken down. Moisture intrusion and dirt intrusion and I don't mean you took the watch diving, just daily wear could allow micro particles in and then corrode or damage what's inside. I would be protective of the watch and get it serviced with or without polishing. Best to photograph the watch well before sending to service, so you are aware of it's condition before you send it and give specific instructions as to what you want done to the watch during the service.

By winding it and letting it run could I be damaging it if the oil is dried out?

No expert here but if the watch have gone for some many years with no touch I think a service would not hurt specially if you want to keep it smooth and avoid something breaking down the line therefore increasing substantially the repair/service bill.

I would go for a service. Lubricants dry out and begin flaking which can affect the movement. Just MHO.

I'd get it serviced. Seals are probably dried up.

Lubricants/seals would be my only concern as well. You essentially have a 1991 day date with 0 miles on it. Would be a different scenario if you had kept it on a winder

To be safe I would get it serviced just because the rubber seals are prob dry.

First get it WR tested to check seal integrity. The damage done from wearing it other than water incursion should be minimal and covered my the cost of a service!!!

A service will ensure all is good and how it should be. A very nice watch.

A Day Date, forgotten for 30 years
I’m no expert but were I you, then off for a service it would go. If you decide to give it a service how about some pre and post pictures?
