15400 2nd Movement Failure – Advice

I’ve owned my 15400 for about 3 years. The movement failed suddenly in late 2019 and the boutique replaced the movement under warranty. No explanation was given for why the original movement stopped working. All was fine until yesterday, when the exact same problem occurred. Even if I wind it or wear it, the watch doesn’t run. Thankfully the watch is still under warranty, but I’ve lost some faith in the 3120 movement and am now considering my options:

1. I’m currently in the queue for a 26239or, the new RO chrono with display caseback. Previously my SA said it’ll take at least two years due to overwhelming demand. Realistically, will I be able to bump myself ahead in the queue?

2. Alternatively, ask for a 15500st or 26315st. My SA previously said I don’t qualify for a steel piece as only one of my APs was purchased at the boutique. Would it be disingenuous if I used the situation as justification for getting in the queue for a 15500/26315, or should I just stick with working on the RO Chrono above?

3. Sit tight, get it fixed and see what AP releases next year and try my luck when the time comes. However, I know that my chances of getting any 2022 RO release are really slim.

4. The last question is whether I should sell my 15400 after it’s been repaired. I’ve never sold any of my pieces before. Would AP take issue if I sold my watch, ie. would they refuse to allocate me in-demand pieces in the future if I do so? I love my 15400 but the thought of a third movement replacement in the future – especially out of warranty – is unpalatable.

Would really appreciate your thoughts on the current situation!

Send it in, but ask them to let you know what went wrong and what they're replacing, since it has failed more than once.

You could also ask the boutique to buy a 15500ST if you want to try the newer 4302 movement. Nothing wrong with that. I would not sell the 15400 before getting another RO.

I have a 15300ST from 2009 that has only needed servicing once (so far).

I’ll consider asking for a 15500, though I still prefer the proportions of the 400. I don’t mind letting this go as long as doing so won’t jeopardise my chances to get other watches from AP, which is my main concern.

OP are you a customer of AP House/Harrods? You’ve been extremely unlucky too the point where ‘user error’ crossed my mind. I wouldn’t sell the watch as it will disappear from your profile and AP will have the ability to check that, so future purchases may be negatively impacted (until you build up sufficient purchase history). Do you keep your watches on winders? I do and have never had a problem in 15 or more years.

I bought my AP’s in different countries while travelling, so I haven’t built a solid profile with anyone in particular. I don’t use winders because I enjoy the ritual of winding my watches. Haven’t had a problem on my other RO’s so far. I live a pretty sedentary life and am careful with all my watches, so it’s unlikely that I’ve exposed my watches to shock. They all get a reasonable amount of wrist time. I’m just a little surprised to hear that two movement failures isn’t enough of a justification, from AP’s perspective, for a customer to sell a watch. So I take it you’re suggesting to fix it, then just wear it as normal?

OP I’m referring to your original post where you stated that you’re “in the queue” for another watch and your profile location is UK that’s why I asked about Harrods or AP House. If I was in your position, and if I was dealing with AP House, then I would have an honest chat with them and see if you can exchange your current model to a different one that you want. However this will be difficult if you didn’t buy the watch from them in the 1st instance.

My primary residence is in the UK, but I’m in Asia for a while due to the pandemic and my queue is with a local boutique from which I’ve bought a 26320. The watch in question was purchased at an AD in Singapore which apparently is no longer an AD.

theres an new version of the 3126. "enhanced" its called

it seems to solved the issues and is very accurate
