Dead Honest...
Here's the deal. I've been offered $35K for my 6263 and, to sweeten the deal, I'll walk away with a 16610 with box and papers for $3500. The buyer is a reputable player in NYC. I wasn't looking, but I'm taking the deal.
We'll meet at his bank, examine the watches, and then I'll stand at his elbow while the cashier cuts the check. What am I missing? Is there something that could go wrong that I am not seeing? Many pros here. Is there anything that could go badly? |

As Larry said "Seems to be a respectable transaction". If he's a reputable person, all is fine. 35k is 35k.

he checks out as a reputable vintage dealer. The question is...NY has an 8% sales tax on casual transactions. If I drive to his bank, do I owe NY $2800?

No tax, unless your in the business of selling watches in NY which your not. $35k for your watch in this economy its like hitting the lotto jackpot. Run do not walk to complete this deal.

I sold my vintage Daytona in 1990 and know I will never be able to replace it.
That said do what you "need" to due. As for me I would not sell my Daytona again. jay |

It's all a balance, isn't it? I can carry it for another twenty years and be a seventy year old with a great 60 year old watch...or I can take the cash, buy a great watch, and be seventy year old without debt and a great twenty year old watch. It's a tough call, no question...and I'll be sad for awhile. But it's the right call. Life is so much like that.

I know almost nothing about vintage Daytona prices, but what I can say is regardless of example, this is 100% a BUYERS market! With that in mind, I've got to believe if you can get $35K in todays market, you will be able to get considerably more in say 2-5 years when the economy is not so upside down (heck, even 12 months from now will probably be better for sellers like you). But, as others have said, $35K is $35K...so if you need the $ now, grab it as cash is always king.

Just be careful going to make the deal. Don't want you to get ripped off, robbed, etc.

But damn...one more time...I'm going to miss wearing this.
But $35K and a 16610? Got to take the deal. |

Wow, such a beautiful watch. Man, tough call. In a time where everyone's hoarding cash, $35K plus a 16610 seems good. Good luck and be safe!

Obviously you really love this watch, which is even more reason for you to hold onto it a while longer. I could understand if you receive absolutely zero enjoyment from the watch...take the money & use it toward something that will bring enjoyment (be it paying off debt or buying other watches)...but clearly you still love wearing it. It does not sound like this watch is a 'safe queen' that sees the light of day once a year. There's a lot to be said about that fact and I don't think you should disregard it. Cash is nice, but life it too short to part with things that put a smile on your face. I can tell from your posts this watch definitely puts a smile on your face. And your fear of walking around w/ a $35K watch can easily be alleviated via insurance (as I'm sure you already have on the watch). That's the beauty of insurance...once insured and you have the piece of mind that you will at least not lose $ if stolen or lost...it gives you the opportunity to freely enjoy the watch. Nope, I would still say walk...enjoy the watch for another couple of years and sell it for $50K+. While modern Daytona's are made in high numbers and probably will never become a true collectors item (at least not in our lifetime), the watch you own IS rare and WILL ALWAYS be rare. Items like that don't go from $35K to $10K...it's just not going to happen. The longer you hold onto it, the more $ you're going to make - period. With 2 more years of ownership you will not only continue the enjoyment you obviously have with the watch, but with the added cash you'll surely make will be enough to buy a couple 16610's + cash. I hope I don't sound like I'm raining on your parade...honestly that's not my intent. I wish you the best of luck if you decide to go through with it and positive you'll enjoy your 16610 + the cash. But it is so obvious in pretty much each one of your posts that this watch means a lot to you and I'm not convinced you're convinced it's time to part with it. |

Also give him your route. E.G. "I'll take the subway to xyz station and walk to the bank". But in actual fact you take a cab or get someone to drop you off in front of the bank door. Being careful is better than being sorry. BTW, the 6263 used to sell in Tokyo for about $35K, it is now down to $25K in this depressed market. So you are getting a super good deal. Just take extra care. |

Posts like that is the reason my post count is so low. I do not get distracted by cashiers cleavage...
No, really, I might... ;-) To the OP: Go to www.chrono24.com and do a search for Rolex 6263 to get an idea of asking prices (obviously they are most likely sold for something different). Also: If you not already gotten PM:s from dealers surfing this side, you could try talking to some of them. 35K is quite some money, but if you do not NEED it, I would propose that you keep the watch. As someone said: It is the greatest of all versions! Best, A |

I would suggest cash. If he calls 3 days in advance the bank can have it ready for him.
