Finally a new unexpected watch! And equally unexpected dilema

This happened last month for my birthday, and I’ve been really thinking about it since then.

So I’ve been pretty happy with my watch collection for almost a decade now, but I’ve been getting into diving this year so I figured I needed a proper diver. So I went to the AD and just for sport asked if they had any subs in stock and to my surprise they told me they had just come in on Friday and they had one of each in stainless. So I asked to try them on, the one that spoke to me was the no date which to my luck was the only one already sold.

I don’t really like the cyclops on watches so I jokingly asked if they by any chance had an old ceramic SD40 and she said no but we have the pelagos (I had already tried the pelagos when the ETA version came out and thought it was too big) I reluctantly said sure let’s try it again. And this blue one really spoke to me, it didn’t feel as tall or bulky as I remembered, it wasn’t much thicker than the subs to be honest. I live in El Salvador so buying used isn’t the best of ideas or easiest buying online, so I bought it and left a deposit for the no date sub (they’re getting a new shipment in December).

Now here’s the unexpected dilema, I really fell in love with this one and I’m starting to think the sub will be redundant. I already own a 5508 which more than scratches the “sub” itch and my trusty explorer hasn’t seen any wrist time since I got the pelagos. I just can’t seem to find a good reason to justify the sub, the Tudor’s lume and Spartan looks are just too cool, and I would probably feel less guilty banging this up on actual dives. So I’m really torn between asking for my deposit back or going through with it, I know how hard they are to get but I feel the only reason I’d go with it is because of fear of missing out on the opportunity.

I’m interested in knowing what your opinions are, should I buy it in December or cancel it and just enjoy the pelagos?

Lol I’ve been thinking about that, I don’t think there’s a big market locally so I’d have to flip it next time I’m in the state’s or Europe, and since pre owned dealers need to make a profit I’m not sure how worthwhile that would be, I’d still need to pay VAT over retail which is 13%

I’m such a big Pelagos fan . I also own the SD43 and D-Blue and Enjoy all three divers . I would buy the Sub when it comes in . You might want one the other or both. It’s great to have options.

The 5508 is quite a treasure, but having that vintage piece with the new reference is really something.

If it's not a burden on your budget, I don't know how you could be disappointed, especially as time goes by.

Watches don't get angry, if they're left sitting in safe spot for a while.

I'd love to be in your position.

Pelagos looks awesome. Wait another month and think it over. If you’re definitely not interested, then don’t buy it.

Buy 1st, think later. Doesn't matter what it is. This is the new reality, the new Rolex.

Worst case scenario you can keep the sub in a safety deposit box safely tucked away where it won't get any scratches and it can retain its beautiful, jewelry-like excellent unworn condition for its next owner... meanwhile, you actually wear and enjoy the Tudor, bond with it and form memories, and use it for its intended purpose as a tool watch.

I would buy the ND Sub when it arrives. There are a lot of divers that will do the job. What you get with Rolex, and the Sub specifically, is history, quality, resale value, and the bracelet that is like no other. IMHO

Sorry man. The Pelagos is a hell of a watch for the price, but it's no sub. I personally cannot stand those snowflake hands. This is just my own personal opinion, but so many of the Tudors are just FUGLY with those damned hands. It's a real shame, too, because the rest of the watches are so nice. If only they had different hands, but I digress...

No, I disagree 100%. The 5508 definitely isn't a replacement for a modern sub in any way, shape or form. It's 38mm for one, and with the press fit bezel assembly and complete lack of any luminescence now, plus old bracelet, it just isn't the same animal at all. My absolute grail piece is a 5510 big crown, so please trust me when I say that I love, love, love the late '50s vintage subs including the 5508 small crown. My AD actually has a 6536 small crown sub in their pre-owned case right now. Beautiful watch, but it's not the same at all. My grail watch box would contain a 5510, 6538, and 6200. All 1950s big crowns. I love vintage watches.

You absolutely can own a vintage piece along with a modern piece and they will scratch two completely separate itches. The itches aren't even on the same part of the body, nor should they be. Each has its own purpose and feel.

I would pass on the Pelagos and get the sub. That's what you really want, otherwise you wouldn't have placed a deposit on it. In hindsight, you will always wish you had waited for the sub if you let it go... You can safely and easily sell the Pelagos here, or keep it as your kick around, beach beater that can really take a beating. The price is right on those.

It's all a question of how you view your watches in the collection.

For example, if you were looking for watches that each filled a specific 'niche,' then indeed a sub and the Pelagos might cancel each other out. However, if you're looking for more of a "shades of gray" type thing, then absolutely there's room for both.

The good news is, if there isn't, you won't have any trouble off-loading a sub in this climate.

Only you can make that decision, Miguel. But I can tell you I LOVE my blue Pelagos for all the reasons you've described. The shade of blue is stunning, the all matte finish gives a serious tool vibe, and it's amazingly comfortable.

I love everything about that watch, minus the hands. I wish they gave an option to choose from two different hand styles. Then it would be perfect. The titanium, the legibility (it's so easy to see and read the time), the heft, and the lume on those is spectacular. I mean even the bezel illuminates like a torch!

I never thought I'd like a particular watch so much, that I find myself reaching for it often. The brand, itself, (to me) is a must own as a watch enthusiast and collector.

I would go with the sub, whether or not you decide to also keep the Pelagos. It will be a nice companion for you and you may appreciate it more and more as time goes on. By contrast, I think you are more likely to fall out of love with the Pelagos, but I'm just speculating.

I’d wait for the Submariner. Pelagos does nothing for me. The blue hue seems a bit loud frankly. And given your avatar Ian would recommend that as well I’m sure.

If you’re someone who wouldn’t dive with a Rolex sub out of fear of banging/scratching/affecting the residual value - then get the Pelagos. Otherwise you’ll get the Sub and still need another dive watch.

I’ve been toying between this Pelagos or the Omega 300m - and I can’t decide for me, let alone make a decision for you :)
