Trading a Rolex
Is trading a Rolex for one of the big three (PP, VC, or AP) a no brainer particularly if there is no cash involved. I.e. say an Explorer 39mm for a VC Overseas

That’s the key point. And if OP finds that the VC disappoints later - he can flip back to an Explorer then. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

It depends on what you intend to use the watch for. It would be better to have both as they are very different kinds of watches .

Depends which model for model but generally yes.
I.E. - I wouldn't trade a SkyDweller for a VC FiftySix. I would definitely take your example all day every day Explorer for a OverSeas. |

I got a Silver Dual-time Overseas last week and yesterday a Daytona. The built quality is superb, and feels and weighs so much better than a Daytona, also less flashy and with the rubber bands and the quick strap change system is a no brainer…
Which Overseas is it?

You give an example but haven't specified actual model references or any grounds on which to judge the success of the trade and you said 'no brainer'. We could all think of an example where it would be a bad trade, financially or subjectively. |

Depends on which watch you prefer. Get the one you want, trade the one you don't. Nothing else matters.

It doesn’t make sense to trade anything for anything unless you really want the new item and ran the actuals numbers behind it.
I personally don’t trade anything. I buy what I like and if I get bored with it, then I know I made a bad decision and sell it. If I like something I keep it forever. Simple as that. |

Definitely not. I would trade some Rolex models for some Trinity models but not all Rolex models for any Trinity model.

Depends. Rolex is the watch that have been on the wrist of the doers in society and the big 3 on the spectators of life, and its not a debate. Rolex has been worn in military campaigns all over the world, been in space, and worn on various expeditions throughout the world and worn by world leaders at some of the most important moments in history.
The Explorer will take punishment the so called big 3 cant even come close to. The big 3 make largely dress watches and some of their models masquerade as sport watches such as the RO or Nautilus, or overseas. Now the big 3 definitely bring craftsmanship and make pretty decorated movements. Rolex make tool watches....yes even today even if they dont look like it, they can take punishment. For me I would not trade my rolex for any of the big 3. I may add one, but would not trade, personally speaking. |

Yeah it would be a no brainer if you had no brain.
Me personally, Just because a watch is an AP/PP/VC doesn’t mean i’d just blindly trade my rolex for it.. |

Purely on monetary value alone, then yes swapping (for example) an Explorer for a VC Overseas is an absolute no-brainer. However if you don't happen to like the VC Overseas, then it's the complete opposite of a no-brainer.
Simple really. |

This “holy trinity” of watch brands is social media propaganda. Make sure what ever you trade for is DURABLE enough and the routine maintenance cost is worth it to you. A immaculately hand finished movement means nothing if the watch fails under your normal lifestyle activities or/and can’t keep a + or - 2 second a day regulation.
“Better” can mean so many thing to so many people.

Funny you should mention this as I have the exact experience and buying my one and only Ferrari was one of my biggest automotive mistakes coming from German cars. It had less performance and cost more to just to sit in my garage than my 911 sitting next to it. Selling my Ferrari was like selling a boat with the exact same sense of relief that it was gone.
