How many watches is too many?

Asking for a friend.

No, but seriously, I would say 8 might be too many. If you go more than a week without wearing a watch, it's not being appreciated.

That said, if you have a dress watch you might wear it once a year (Eg Cellini etc).

"Talking watches" makes me feel like a pauper.

Anyone have insight?

5 is too much to me, but I’m in the minority.

3 in a rotation, and 1 oddball as the max.

Preferably just 3 total though.

Agree with this being the perfect number

One dressy

One sport

One travel

One oddball

I had this for a little while, but then I spent to much time on this board and you know what happens

I honestly think two Rolex watches is the magic number. I'd much rather branch out to different models with the 3rd and/or 4th slot. I'm also not a fan of having both the GMT and a diver in the arsenal, it's the exact same look with an added function. Not to mention the GMT hand is super overrated in today's time with cellphones and computer being by your side (and I say this as somebody who travels extensively throughout the year). I truly don't understand these guys saying a GMT is 'essential' when they only jump to the Caribbean a couple times a year for vacation

Right now, my magic Rolex duo would be my SD43 and then adding a two-tone white face Daytona. 3rd spot will be allocated to something I personally enjoy on leather from PP or ALS. That gives me a diver for everyday/traveling, a chrono for a completely different aesthetic, especially being TT and then a manual wind on leather for all formal occasions/when I want to be low-key.

Just where I'm at after about 15 years of being into this game and recently purging everything and starting from scratch

I'd go one step further and say one is the magic number for Rolex. Ideally if I ever get back down to 3-4 watches I'd like one Rolex, one Omega, and two other brands. Rolex and Omega are my favorite brands so I think I'd always like one of each. But beyond that there's a few other brands that could occupy 3 and 4 (Tudor and GS come to my mind anyway).

I do think there is something to the Land/Air/Sea mix in a three watch collection. Chrono, diver and GMT just work so well as a three-fer. I see your point on most of us not really needing a GMT watch but let's face it most of us don't need any watches these days. Much more of a want than a need I suppose.

Just personal choice. If you love having 1 or 100, there’s no right or wrong answer.

Anything more than 2 is too many but when you get into this hobby, it is very hard to stop, by the time I know, I have more than 20 now.

I think as long as you're happy with them, it's OK to keep them all and enjoy it.

If you're on this forum, you have either too many or not enough. Probably both.

I have a solution. Keep 4 watches at home. Leave the rest in a bank vault. And rotate out every few months.

Too much when you have to borrow money from a loan shark. LOL.

Seriously, I need one each for casual and formal, plus 1 as a spare/for fun.

I'm at 8, currently
I once said 7 was a good number
If money was no object I'd probably sit around 15 based on what i'm currently looking at.

I dont think there's a right or wrong number, but if you have pieces that get very little wrist time then i'd say they're redundant and should go.
Whether you replace it with something else is your call

Aside from my Dress Watch, every watch i own get at least 1 day a week on the wrist
Having Automatic/Manual Wind watches with a date window helps me keep track of what hasn't been worn in a while
Most mornings i just look at my collection and pick whatever has the oldest date showing on the dial
The 2 quartz watches i own are typically worn on Mondays and Tuesdays and the rest are rotated through based on last time i wore it or my mood
