Incoming….but need some advice

Greetings friends,
I hate to admit it but the Daytona bug hit me hard. After a multi-year wait, I’ve decided to pay the premium and go grey for a 116500. I’ve come to the conclusion that life is too short and a Daytona is a special watch.

I’ve identified a reputable grey dealer with a watch and they sent me a few pics. The dealer offered to polish the watch prior to sending. I plan to keep the watch in my rotation and wear it multiple days a week.

Would you suggest I take them up on the offer to polish? Or should I find another watch not requiring a polish?

I would polish it so you get that new experience. I can't deal with even my own scratched watches let alone someone else's scratched watches.

Thanks, I definitely have some OCD but realize the watch will probably be scratched up in a few months anyway

2. If you are paying a premium- I would look for a like new one or slider (make your own memories with the scuffs & scratches)

Thanks for your help. Like new is an even higher premium over msrp! I got to stop somewhere

I think it depends how much you're paying. If you're getting a deal it may be worth it. If you're paying top dollar then I would want a brand new piece in mint condition.

If I were you, I wouldn't pay gray. I hope you tried on the Daytona in person already because at retail price it's amazing but at current gray prices it may be somewhat underwhelming.

Unfortunately I don’t see the price dropping anytime and the wait is only getting longer. I am not a whale and feel like my AD is not terribly helpful despite my best efforts.

In the meantime, the prices have continued to climb.

Maybe get a better deal and have the polishing done yourself?
However, I would wait it out if I were you and not buy from a gray.

i would try to find something in like new condition. i'd rather not polish a watch personally because a few months in the polish will go to waste

Trust me, I am patient. But if you want a Daytona from an AD with little purchase history, it’s highly unlikely that you can get it unless you buy lots of other random jewelry or other watches. And, I don’t see the market dynamics changing in the foreseeable future.

Don’t polish it.

There is something VERY liberating about putting on a worn watch and just wearing it as you should.

When it is pristine you are scared to scrape or bang it on anything, at least for me, that takes weeks to get over.

Wear it, don’t be tempted to try to polish it yourself. Even a capable grey dealer can mess it up.

Enjoy it and let Rolex sort it out in 10 years.

I am very OCD but find that if a piece is scratch free I do not wear it often! Whereas if it has a few marks, I am more relaxed and able to enjoy. And PCLs bracelets are a scratch magnet and no matter how careful I am, they always seem to collect scratches within weeks, even when carefully worn! I'd say, don't polish especially if still with factory finish. If previously polished a light buff should remove those hairline scratches and give the watch a cleaner look.

Don't do the polishing if you're going to buy it and wear it. Don't do it!! 36k is not bad. Dont listen to the others. You have no other choice. Life is short and you have the money.

Those scratches are not a big deal. You will put some on yourself. You DON'T polish a watch like this. No way

Without knowing the price I would either leave it alone or find a better example for Grey money. There are no deals on these watches but you can negotiate with our Trusted Sellers to a certain extent. DavidSW has more then a few on his site and will talk you through condition and price. Unless they can beat his prices significantly, I would look at him. I did, as I bought both of my SS Daytona-C's from him. The prices in the Grey market continues to march up and for now, every watch I have bought Grey and held for more than a minute has returned my initial cost or in many cases, more then I paid. Now is a good time if you are going to do it as we are coming out of summer and prices are somewhat flat. If you wait till later in the year and get close to the Holidays the price will be even higher then now. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

My thoughts, too...unless you're getting some kind of crazy good deal for the scratched up one.

It's been my experience tho, that isn't usually the case.

Being that it’s SS, it may be less of an issue vs a PM piece….but I would do one of two things…
I’d ask to see anything they’ve had polished by the person/company/watchmaker they use, and if the job is very, very good, I’d go that route.
If you’re not comfortable with that option, I’d find a better condition 116500

I usually buy NIB grey, but, if the watch has been PROPERLY touched up, I’m ok with that for SS pieces.
I like to start with a fresh/clean slate, and make my own scratches.
