Watch Subjectivity vs Retail Chance

Say that you are visitting you're local ad/boutique and wearing your mightiest piece in your arsenal/the same model/not wearing a watch at all. Will it affect your chances of getting a coveted model?

Some responses from the SA I came to mind are :
1. This guy has a lot of money, we might "fish" him out with hublots, datejust etc before giving him what he wants.
2. This guy is wearing the same model, maybe he's not a flipper and we might trust him with the daytona/royal oak etc.
3. He's not wearing a watch at all, a new customer, maybe we can give him a submariner for his entry to the game (I have read on this forum some are getting royal oak 38mm without any prior purchase history) or all together just dismiss him as those who are joining the hype.
4. He's got a killer/complicated piece, he knows and likes horology, so maybe he's less a flipper.

Any thoughts or prior experience regarding to this?

Sometimes….and I mean sometimes…..

Wearing a “heavy hitter” reference and presenting oneself with an aloof, disinterested but confident attitude, may trigger a response to ”please” in the SA and get something out of the back or on a short list for something moderately hawt, in hopes of them scoring a fresh whale.

This is not a common occurrence and depends on many factors, but I’ve seen it pulled off a time or two.

I agree. The only thing that sometimes works is looking like a VIP and not trying.

When you say you’ve seen it pulled off a time or two, do you mean you were actually in a store, observed a stranger walk in the door, present themselves as a heavy hitter and, without prior purchase history or familiarity to the SA, actually walk out with a highly desirable, in demand Rolex time piece?

I’ve never seen it but it is a totally believable proposition.

All first impressions count no matter how much people like to pretend it doesn’t, and depending on the overall interaction, this may result in a positive outcome for the walk in.

Probably not overly positive though.

Yes. I was visiting an AD that I have a relationship with earlier this year.

A gentleman walked in with a Platinum DD40 on and was talking to a younger SA. Walked out with a Sub Date. He was calm and collected. Not an eager beaver by any stretch. I asked my SA if he was a regular and he said nope…but they happened to have a sub date come in and the allocation customer flaked, so I guess it was his day…

There was a family I saw at different AD who looked the part with what they were all wearing, (PM DD and subs) end up with a blue Milgauss from what I could overhear it was their first time there , new in the area..etc. but I left before I saw them buy it, but the watch did come out of the back for them.

No Daytona’s, Blue SKD..etc. so not sure if those were hawt enough references to qualify…and rare instances indeed. 99% of the time the AD tells fresh faces to hit the bricks..

I think I’m going to buy a Hublot and try my luck wearing that in an unknown AD..lol

They don't care what you are wearing, all pieces are accounted for X10.

I used to get pretty much anything, zip, zilch, nadda, see you later alligator.

Really Mess with their heads
Walk in Wearing a Panda Daytona
Tell them you want another Panda Daytona to wear on the other wrist
They wont know if you're a flipper or have more money than brains

It probably doesn't matter what you are wearing. The crux is about how much you spend on unpopular pieces.

I did that, and didn't work out, I get the impression that I am still buying unpopular pieces without getting what I want(a few DJs for my loved ones), so they think they can "fish" me more before allocating my desired watch or even not at all.

Having spent that much, and still haven't got the model I want, there's an "itch" in me to spend maybe a little more to get the hawt piece. You know that feeling that you're "almost there" and the feeling it will be a "wasted" $50k in the end, as you don't get what you want.

Sorry I don't understand. You are buying things you don't want. Why do you think you are ""almost there"?

The 50K is wasted.

Good luck.

Madness did you not have some prior arrangement as to what you wanted or 50k was just your ceiling?

This is exactly why models have the premiums they do I certainly wouldn’t mind you as a customer

Is there more money to be had in the future from a gentleman in a DD or a kid in a sub? That’s which walk-in the SA is going to sell the hawt watch to.

Most all of this AD stuff is complete and utter internet gossip nonsense.

I wore my Daytona when I went to order my Nautilus. No idea whether it was advantageous or not, but I was asked how I’d managed to get one which led to a long discussion about my long standing relationship with my Rolex AD. It certainly didn’t do any harm in demonstrating that I (a) am not a flipper, and (b) believe in building long term relationships.

I’ve also noticed that when walking into high-end watch stores, nearly all SAs look straight at my wrist before looking at my face. What they then make of what I’m wearing, I have no idea.

It matters. Makes it easier to profile/qualify a customer for a top performing professional SA.

Haven't had any luck with the new ADs I've been trying with. Might wear my Daytona the next time and see how it goes.

Pull up in green lambo, wearing gold Daytona, with beautiful personal assistant taking notes of all the conversation and ask them to keep your assistant updated.

I asked this question years ago to my AD manager. She responded that they never judge a watch customer’s buying potential on looks or watch but solely on purchase history. Seems logical and in line with observed behavior.

This thread is more about people walking in without a history.

With my AD it no longer matters even if I wear a Mickey Mouse watch.

Buying and discouraged...

So are the AD's losing right to sell Rolex? No stores in Southeast Texas have watches?
