Hi,

I'm thinking of swapping my 2005/06 D serial Sea-Dweller (serviced by Rolex in November 2020) for the following Explorer 2 polar:

The reason I'm thinking of swapping it is that over the years I have warmed towards the Explorer 2 polar, and in particular, the white-dialled version. I also prefer 5 digits over 6 digits so the 216570/226570 is a no-go for me.

What are people's thought's on this swap? and what are your thought's on the Explorer 2 in the link provided.

Hey,

It's a personal choice but i would never do it!

1. SD is a beautiful beautiful piece
2. It holds its value a lot better than Explorer.

But in the end it's your choice.

The SD is a beautiful piece but I've always had an affection for the Explorer 2. I'm not too worried about value retention as I'd keep the Explorer 2 for life.

I have both and would not swap the 16600 for a 16570. The SD is a superior watch - pretty much top of the tree in the 5-digit Rolex catalogues of the past.

I have never owned a SD, but, I can tell you that my 16750 polar has slowly evolved to being my favorite watch. It can do anything and be taken anywhere. It looks just as nice with a suit as it does with shorts and a t-shirt.

Because of the fixed steel bezel, I don't need to worry about knocking it around or scratching it as much as I do with my 16710 GMT.

I think long term you might regret it. Only do it if you do not like the SD. I love them as the tank of the 5 digit case.

Historically the Explorer II has seen some of the biggest value-retention jumps than other models.

The 16570 will likely continue in this trending as seen by the previous Exp II generations.

The SD is a niche watch, with a relatively small following. The Exp II can be worn, anywhere, and is comfortable both physically and mentally.

Ideally you could have both. But when you can reasonably only have one, you choose the one that is the one that you want to put on your wrist every day.

Save up and get the explorer also you'll be glad you did. Otherwise flip a coin. when it's in the air, you'll know which side you're hoping for. Here’s a picture of both of mine couldn’t imagine selling one for the other though.
