To do or not to do?

What do you fine folks think about trading an M series PAM 233 plus cash for a Girard P Laureato 42mm steel with blue dial? Getting a new blue dial for around USD 9k.

What should I expect to get for an M series PAM, complete with box (inner and outer) and papers?

Current crop consists of the PAM, a 39mm Explorer and an ALS Up/ Down. Tired of waiting for the rollie shortage to ease and figured I don’t wear the PAM much. Does a shiny GP make sense (the brand is a bit of an under-performer, though it is more bang for the buck compared to the Rollie).

I’m not a flipper but like to pass on watches that are no longer in rotation to others who might make better use of them.

Maybe I'm jaded but way back around 2012, after swearing off of Paneristi.com, I traded my PAM87 plus $1500 for a Rolex 16520. Three years later I traded the 16520 and my PAM103 plus $5K for a white dial Patek 5711/1a.
I still have a PAM28B which I would take too big a hit on to sell so I keep it on my dresser and use it as a clock.
Somewhere along the way I traded my PAM233 straight across for a Rolex 16600 Sea Dweller, which seemed stupid at the time, but that's what you do when you're desperate.
The point is, Panerai's are a declining asset, price wise. That's how I really feel.

I see. Yes, if you look at watches like that, there are very few brands and models that will appreciate in value. I suppose that misses the point completely for me, so we are coming at it from very different perspectives. Nothing wrong with that, of course.

When I started my career Panerai was all the rage and I had no money. I'll always want to have a PAM in my collection. Nothing screams 2007-2008 like a BMW M3 and a Panerai.

If you replace "anytime" with "most of the time," then the quote is correct in my book. PAM233 is a decent timepiece and a classic Panerai. The GP model mentioned in the thread is a good re-wash of AP RO. Don't know what I'd pursue in this case, but PAM seems a bit more authentic to me in the sense of style.

Well when compared to assets such as rolex and steel patek… yeah Panerai is not a good move financially. But the look and well rounded 233 is a great piece if your wrist can handle the bulk.

I have always purchased my watches preowned with a few exceptions and definitely my Panerai.

If you don’t wear the 233; trade it. Like in anything else you will get more for it if you do a private sale.

Finally did it. After much hemming and hawing and backing and forthing, traded in my 233 plus cash for a mint GP, 42 mm Laureato with blue dial, 25% off from an AD… plus few goodies like free insurance, watch storage box, omega pen etc thrown in.

Had an opportunity to try on a white dialler RO just before swiping the card, and I must say that the RO looks industrial compared to the GP! Loving the fit, finish, lines and the spinning rotor

Ha ha…. I went through the exact same thing. All doubt ceased when I tried on the watch and I found a ready buyer for my 233.

I presume that getting a Royal Oak is like getting a SS Rolex, unobtanium.

I had a PAM 005 when they were all the rage. But 44mm on my 6.5 inch wrist looked like a frisbee. I traded it towards a Sub, which cost a total of about $6000 ( partly funded by the PAM) in that era. I will say I’ve tried on 40mm PAMs and they look good.

ROs and Rolex steel models are available “for display purposes only” :) at least it gave me an opportunity to try on the RO before pulling the trigger on the Laureato.

The 233 sat well on my wrist, mainly due to the slimmer 1950 case but over time I just found it heavy and uncomfortable to wear with leather straps over long periods of time. Wearing it on a thick ammo made it super comfortable but then a thick ammo doesn’t really go with my work wear and definitely doesn’t fit under my shirt cuffs. It had hardly been getting any wrist time before the pandemic and once WFH started, the explorer was my daily wearer.

I’m glad the 233 has a new home.
