I've ripped my calf muscle

Hi all

About ten days ago I ripped my left calf muscle. Thing is, I wasn't doing anything at all strenous. I was stepping over something keeping my leg straight, toes pointed skyward when I felt an almighty "crack". At first I thought I had snapped a tendon, but the hospital tested it & said I ruptured/ripped my calf muscle. My calf & foot are incredibly swollen & I'm on crutches.

I'm normally quite fit & active & am perplexed as to why this happened...

Just over the last day or so I've now got an almighty black & green bruise all over my foot (even on the sole) and all over my calf & shin.

Anyone else done this? Am I really getting too old...?

I don't think you're old... you probably just moved in a funny way.

I'm feeling completely achy from the last few days as well...

Dude - I've pulled a muscle in my side while sneezing - and I am physically active and only 32. So, don't feel too bad - things happen! Hope you recover soon!

Drop me a PM if you are looking for contact details of a top physio in the London area.

Good luck with the recovery.

Whew... Tony, I was worried you were going to post a pic and make us look! Sounds terrible - so sorry for your misfortune. Will it heal all by itself?

Sorry to hear that. That has to be quite uncomfortable and very much inconvenient. My dad had something similar happen to him except in his arm. I hope you have a speedy recovery.

So you will say you have some kind of muscles?

What did you do, try to fire it up a old BSA or a Triumph?

my friend, sorry to hear and I wish you a speedy recovery.

Being active will not prevent muscle tears or ruptures.

I think the best preventable measures for this, if you workout frequently, is stretching.

Stretching before workouts does wonders.

OUCH I know exactly how you feel. It happened to me about 3 years ago on my right calf. The pain was so sudden and sharp like as if it was shot. The muscle tears and you cannot flex it or move it in any way. You will probably need physical therapy and to stretch it because when it mends it can heal short. Take it slow.
Good luck.

Try eating monkey glands, or bathing in virgins' blood, to keep you young. That's what I do, but there are very few monkeys or virgins left in York (and no virgin monkeys).

Either that or arnica cream, which you can get in Holland and Barrett or Boots. It works wonders after Monday night five-a-side. I was a bit dubious when one of my kick-boxing frends suggested it but it is brilliant.

Hope you get better soon.

Sorry about that Tony.

You are obviously old.

I don't pull any muscles as I don't use them. Best Way.

I pulled a calf muscle about 20 years ago and I thought I had been shot, so I feel your pain. Be sure to properly rehab when you can get started. My calf still has a small dent in it.

Thanks everyone for your best wishes & advice.

Lisa, the doctors have said it should heal by itself. How long that will be, is anyone's guess...

Jocke, I did have a 1960 BSA C15 many years ago, but had to sell it to pay the mortgage when I seperated from one of my ex's. No Rolexes then!

Funny how a couple of guys mentioned it felt like being shot. I've never been shot myself, but if that's how it feels, I think I'll give it a miss!

Thanks again for all your best wishes. I can't stay on the computer too long because my foot & calf swells up like a balloon!
