Explorer 1016 for every day wear?
Hello friends.
Ok, this will probably not happen, but I was just contemplating trading a couple of pieces for an Explore 1016 and I was wondering if you all can help me with some real-world ownership inquiries I'd like to know ahead of time. If I do purchase one, I would prefer a late model such as a 1989 for the hacking 1570 movement and I would actually prefer a matte Luminova service dial for the benefit of working lume. Unlike most collectors, I don't mind the bright white lume paint. 1) are the parts available for servicing these movements? 2) are the servicing costs more, less or about the same as compared to say my 114270 with 3130 movement? 3) are the Luminova service dials still available from Rolex? Thank you in advance! |

1. Parts seems to be available everywhere except north America.
2. It costs more, at least here, because ... uh, I think just because. 3. - |

To get an accurate answer for your particular circumstances, I'd suggest contacting the specific RSC you intend to use, since these things seem to be quite variable from country to country, or even location to location. Every time a question like this arises, someone says that they just had their watch serviced by an RSC and someone else says that their RSC refused to serviced their watch.

I have a 1014 I purchased recently. I had it serviced by a local guy, and now it's a part of my regular rotation of watches.
So, I don't see an issue with it. PDG EDIT: Mine is a 1014 OP, not an Explorer, but I suspect it's probably the same, or at least a very similar movement. |

I bought an old one and switched out (ruined) dial and (Sub) hands for correct service versions. But if I was doing it again? I'd just bite the bullet and buy an R serial example from one of the members here, the best one I could afford. As a daily the newer version would be best IMO, but even the older 1016s are perfectly serviceable. As a cheap fix I may send mine to LAWW for a case restoration...but it'd've been cheaper overall if I'd just bought a good one to start with!
