No date sub - what do you think?

I'm curious what people think of the no date sub (compared to the date sub, obviously)? As a diving tool watch, it makes a lot of sense not to have a date on the dial. Esthetically speaking, not having a date window makes for a super clean dial and possibly better visibility at night.

How is the no date sub considered in the Rolex line up? Ugly duckling or just as popular as the rest?

(Personally, I also find date complications early fairly useless generally...)

I got one of the last NIB 14060M models in the United States in December 2011, before the 114060 was introduced at Basil 2012.

I like the new Subs, but the 14060M is my favorite of all the Subs.

Agreed. There's only one Submariner. An icon. You can also get a version with a date complication, but it's not the original. I prefer the Sub date. Each to our own.

THE sub is the 5513, 14060, 114060, 124060 !
The others are the sub date.

When I bought mine, it was slightly less popular in the market. Now, I think people will take what they can get. Among the enthusiast community, I’d say the Sub (ND) is more popular.

Having a rotation, the ND is a more convenient option for me. As a daily/only driver, I’d get the Sub Date.

This is my thinking too. For a watch I'm wearing every day, the date comes in handy when I go to sign and date a document, etc. For a two watch (casual/dress) collection, I'd go with the date function on the casual one (like a Sub) and no complications on the dress watch. In a rotation, I'd be less concerned about it.

Both awesome watches. It comes down to if you find a date compilation useful. I find it nice for my uses to have a date. Both are just as sought after.

the submariner is an icon. easily gets the most wrist time for me, and i have a decent sized collection with many more expensive and complicated pieces (including other subs with dates).

incredibly versatile and comfortable. shorts, jeans, suits. goes with everything and goes anywhere. if i ever decided to downsize to a smaller collection, the 114060 would be one i'd hold on to for sure.

No date is a great looking watch! Looks nice and simple without the date window and cyclops. Symmetry is the word! If I was choosing, I would prefer the date though. Very useful feature to me.

The Submariner, or some like to call it the "no date sub", is the purists choice since it was clearly designed for one purpose which is diving.

By creating the Submariner Date they've essentially created a hybrid watch, while still great for diving it can also be more practical as an everyday watch with the date function.

Just imagine being abroad somewhere tropical in the 80s, going for a day dive and then wearing your watch to dinner that evening. The date could be useful at the dinner table.

With todays tech we don't need a date function, let alone any mechanical wrist watches for that matter since we have smartphones. This allows us to go back to the more purist watch of choice as a luxury, making the Submariner, aka no date Sub the watch of choice for collectors IMO. the symmetry without the date is also beautiful.

Divers need to know the date too. They wake up and someone tells them there's a dive mission on the 9th. Okay cool, but what day is it today? With a Sub date they can look down and see it right away.

Both watches are great and command a great deal of respect. I would get what you like more. If you find the date useful, go for it, if not, the sub is more symmetrical. Don't worry about self proclaimed "purists" or people telling you enthusiasts prefer this, or that etc. It's a modern sub after all.

And today, people typically get whatever their AD calls them for anyway, and then think of the reason they prefer it afterwards. It's human nature.

The Submariner an "ugly duckling" in Rolex´s line-up? No way, mate! An ugly duckling for me is the Sub date with that awful cyclops, so out of place on a proper dive watch imho! The Submariner has the perfect symmetrical dial, one of Rolex´s timeless classics. But lots of people do love the cyclops and want the date function. All a matter of personal preference! Oddly enough the cyclops on a GMT, Date Just etc. doesn't bother me at all...I just don't like it on a Sub. But I'm biased, as I have an old 14060 Submariner, drilled lug holes and all!

Just picked up a ND a week ago. Why would I need the date? I'm a teacher, so I always know the date from memory. Plus the balance of the dial is not disrupted. Plus I can't see the date with my eyes anyway!

All good reasons and I agree as I feel the same way about the Explorer.

I would rather have it than the date. I like the symmetry of the dial and the no-nonsense look.
