Would you have a platinum Daytona, or “……”

A hypothetical question - Just looking at the prices of these nowadays you could trade this in for let’s say for example 3 day dates a SS SUB and an SS GMT.

This is a truly unique and irreplaceable watch of course - and i personally have a large enough collection to warrant having it in.

But when put as a trade for example in my first paragraph, its pretty hard ignore that.

What would you do? Keep this truly unique and great watch to wear, or would you trade it in for an entire collection of prestigious watches?

Personally? I have 2 day dates and the two stainless references mentioned. But if I didn’t? I’m not so sure. More of an exercise to see the opinions of others.

It's so personal..

For me, the platinum Daytona would be the only watch I'd ever need so I'd definitely keep it. Until I find something better of course lol.

If it had the brown sub dials (what ever your into) I would keep it. That thing is truly my grail no matter the price.

I believe this watch is the end game for many. Many collectors/enthusiast start with SS, then TT or Gold and ultimately Platinum. As your collection and taste evolves you’ll likely end up with a full gold or platinum piece, thinking “I wish I had gone straight to this watch 20 years ago”.

So to me trading it in for a collection of SS, TT and DD is in a way going backwards and ultimately you’ll be dreaming of your platona…
By then the price would have gone up even higher so you have to trade in all those watches + extra cash to get back to where you were today…

I believe some people would actually consolidate their collection at some point and just go for one or a couple PM pieces and be done with it.

Jay, I hear you. I bought the Platona three years ago; there isn't a day goes by now, where I don't wonder what other watch or watches I'd be happier with. Frankly I've looked but I can't find anything I'm willing to trade it for. I bought at a discount but now it's worth much more which makes it even harder to consider swapping it.

This was my grail that I thought I could obtain a few years ago. Back then it was a bit out of my reach but I should have stretched and just bought it. Hind sight as they say is 20/20.

Now today it would be my unattainable grail as wouldn't spend that kind of money on a watch.

Needless to say my answer would be a resounding KEEP THIS BAD BOY.

You can only wear one watch at a time. Keep the Platona and pick up a SS Sub and you are done.

Keep it Jay. We can only wear one at a time brother. Quality over quantity. Ive cut my collection from double digits to single digits. As you know I'm trying to get one more and call it a wrap. 3-4 in PM and 3-4 in SS is ideal IMO

I do like Harry's idea though. Interesting.

Unless you already have the car you want.

Definitely wouldn’t trade your platinum daytona baguette you will regret it big time in the long run, you can only wear one watch on your wrist and you’ve got the best of the best

These days, if I find myself happy and content with any of my watches, I'm much less inclined to offload it in hopes of finding something better.

To answer your question, Jay, if I liked it, there's no way I would part with it.

I owned that exact watch and moved it along. I just could not get use to the brown. I prefer a more diverse collection and while the Platinum anything from Rolex is great I just don't think the associated price makes it worth it for me.

Ultimately watches are objects to me and I typically don’t get “attached” so to speak.
My father passed recently and left a couple Rolex to me that I have an instant sentimental attachment to, as I wouldn’t never part with those, but the others come and go.
I love my watches, and they make me happy when I look at my wrist. I’ve always said when I started seriously collecting nice watches, I would like to try everything, within reason, that interests me.
So I have my staples for the most part, and those rotate in and out periodically, but as far as you specific to the reference you’re talking about….it’s a damn special watch that I’ve had a few of, and at this point I did take advantage of the stupid prices and offloaded it for my other passion!
Let’s just say I love my cars just as much as my watches, and they make me happy when I look in my garage!

Even before the crazy prices, those trades were were even better ratios back a few years ago. You could have gotten maybe 10 subs and gmts for 1 platinum Daytona.

But really, my guess is if you can afford the platinum datyona, you can probably also afford to squeeze in one more sub. We have a serious affliction here with our inability to choose and be disciplined about adding watches!

It is a point of arrival. I would sell it if I had closed with the passion of watches .
Otherwise I would place a Sub / SD alongside it and I would be absolutely satisfied

I would.

Pt Daytona is very special.

I constantly thinking about consolidating and I'd love to wear just 3 watches to simplify things.

Pt Daytona or WG Blue Dial Daytona daily
Pt 5270p
321 Ed White remake

Arguably 3 of the best modern/current watches from 3 great brands (for me). None of them are OTT.

Problem is, when it comes to parting with my watches to make this happen, I just can't make the leap. Plus I'd end up telling myself I need a beater and buy a no date sub, then I need something on rubber and get a WG Daytona, then its because I need a GMT so id get an aquanaut. It just doesn't stop.

I would agree with 2/3 of this :) I have owned many many watches, IMO, the Platona is my Rolex grail and you would need to pry from my cold dead hands. Hard pressed to find a better plat watch on bracelet.

Looks great!! Well it was my 50th birthday last week and I asked for one, and guess what? Nothing, no call, and I spent 127,000 with these people. Maybe i will get a call in February for it?? New allocations arriving I hope.

it's funny, many of us are on the other end of this. I certainly own enough watches to consolidate and get a Pt Daytona (it crosses my mind regularly lol). I absolutely love your daytona. So while I wouldn't give up all my watches for one, I'd suggest you keeping the one watch instead of trading for a collection.

Weird how that works haha. At the end of the day it comes down to what you want. I don't think i'll ever be a one watch kind of guy. I absolutely love having a collection. Different watch for different occasions and activities. But it really depends on your lifestyle.
