SD 4000, polished or not?

Hi, I'm thinking of buying this watch. Can you give me opinion on the crown guards. They look like they've been polished and are pretty small to my untrained eye. Tell me there is nothing to worry about.

Is the seller claiming otherwise? That is pretty obvious.

Definitely polished, but looks in decent condition.
Has it been serviced recently?

What's the price they are asking?

Today there is a anti polish syndrome god know why, as long as any polish is done correctly then no problem. Picture below of my own late 1990s early 2000 16600 SD. used as a real working tool for many years underwater. And would expect it has seen more use and sometimes abuse that todays mainly pampered watches will see in 10 lifetimes. Plus its been serviced and polished by 3 different RSC world wide now 22 years old and still fully working and ticking strong.

You have been lucky with polishing but I have seen horrible jobs done by watches repolished by RSC. I would personally never gets any of my watch repolished and that’s what I always ask when my watches go for service at RSC.

Padi Phrase Bingo - 02/02/2022

Anti poilish syndrome - yep, it's there!
Mainly pampered - tick
$$$£££ object things - not today (not on this thread anyway)
In the real world - swing and a miss
So called social media - nope

I suppose 40% is a good effort!

Keep going Padi, and don't you change for anyone!

Don't buy it. The other guys in the "No Polish" club will mock the hell out of you forever.

Looks like very mildly polished. Just make sure u bring the watch to RSC for authentication of what's inside. Older watches tend to have "histories"

Not absolutely certain but I'd say as it's in such nice condition it doesn't really matter.

This is very confusing. The 16600 posted by OP has been polished for sure and it’s not a very good job. Crown guards are very thin and polished surfaces on the sides are not flat. GT0279a show pictures of a very sharp 16600 which is not the one posted by OP.

I think a common rule with most 5 digits now is that it should be expected to have been polished given the age of these things. If it hasn't, you should expect to see some wear marks and scratches.

If it has no scratches and is stated as being "unpolished" you should be expecting prices to be significantly higher than other similar models, because those are rare and often labelled as "NOS".

Frankly, polishing doesn't really bother me on an older watch as long as it has been done well.

Pretty much the same with me. I have been fortunate to have owned quite a few Rolexs through the years, many of which have undoubtedly been polished, not least of all on account of their age and level of use. Never really been an issue with me. If they are keeping good time, are still waterproof why not just enjoy them?

With the here so called "anti-polish" syndrome its not only about watches. In this times the market/buyers prefer "originality", "honesty" - lets call it Patina!

For me spoken i prefer a (vintage) watch with scratches than one "just serviced" - its the same with (vintage) cars - i prefer my 911/Type 964 with original paint than one looks like new but is 5 times overpainted! Easy as that - honesty, originality! Same with humans - better aged with "grandesse" than 3 times lifted!

Salutations

Same opinion on the 964 though, but my 996 turbo has seen some things, especially with my driving style
