Sleeper watch suddenly got hot

So...I put myself on a waiting list for a YM40mm Rolesium and it came in as predicted, after a 6 month wait. Bear in mind, an AD who were stripped of their Rolex AD status told me that this model had been hovering around the same price point for years and probably would never go up. FF to 6 months later, got it from a reliable AD at REP and as I suspected this sleeper just blew up and is now fetching almost double the REP on the grey market.. That being said, I purchased my first Explorer 3 years ago out of stock and had the choice between the Explorer, a Millgaus and an Rolex Oyster Perpetual Steel Grey Rhodium Dial 39 mm. Unthinkable nowadays. Our collection now holds said Explorer 39mm, a vintage Lady Datejust 28mm from 1984, a DJ41mm Rolersor and the YM40mm. I'm now considering the ultimate sleeper, the Cellini 18K, so often overlooked yet so understated and distinguished, or just go for it and try and get hold of a Sky Dweller Rolesor since the steel ones have become unattainable. Strange times we live in. Is there such thing as a sleeper Rolex anymore?Name: YM40 lowres.jpg

As a matter of fact, I do.
Wouldn't trade it for a Submariner.

Talking of which, I would love to own a moon phase but the Cellini moon phase falls short IMO, especially compared with the intricate beauty of the Stelline 6062.

Congratulations OP, great choice.

Agreed, the YM is gaining momentum. For the first time in 8 years since I bought mine, it is now trading above its latest retail price (before being discontinued). It's nice to know it's worth something but if the bubble bursts, IDGAF. I'll never sell it. I bought it to wear it, enjoy it, put nice memories to it.

I love this watch and it's the one I've worn the most since I got it brand new at a very nice discount (aaah, the good old days). Not only is it comfortable but it's sporty and classy at the same time, not an easy balance to strike. It has a unique personality, such a sexy watch. Just talking about it makes me want to wear it. I also like the fact few people have one, compared to the obvious choice. Not saying the obvious choice is a bad choice, just that it's not my choice.

Enjoy it and wear it in good health, OP.

Exactly this. It's a value play because, quite frankly, it's a pretty ugly watch that just has "Rolex" on it.

If Daytonas start trading for $75k, this watch will go up. If Daytonas fall to $35-40k, this is going down.

Yep. This is Rolex’s bastard child. Sorry, no offense.

No offense taken, I like the look better than than of the Sub, it also sells at a premium compared to the Sub, partly because of the Platinum bezel.
And bear in mind this model was Rolex's planned replacement watch for the Sub. They both share a lot of DNA.
IMO the YMII is the odd one out with the uppercase model name splashed om the bezel. And even that one I would gladly wear :D

Yeah I agree the Daytona is ugly, too much going on with that dial and those crowns. Its the big boys version of this....

I think the biggest sleeper in looks vs price comparison are the TT Daytonas (zenith or in-house movement)..
Still a whole lot of bang for the buck..

I love a Daytona TT zenith dial or not, but to call them a sleeper?
One of the watches an AD will not even put you on a waiting list for if you have no purchase history, together with Subs and GMTs.

Only oldtimers remember but when the SS/Plat Yachtmaster was introduced around 2000, it had a brief run of being hard to get/high demand. I was offered one by an AD in lieu of the Daytona I asked for. Just a few months later an opportunity for one of the last 16520’s came up and I sold the Yachtmaster to afford it. A year later I added another Yachtmaster, the only time I ever bought the same exact model twice.
It’s long gone now but I have always liked them and never had any desire to buy a Sub. It’s the “Deluxe Diver.”

The thing is when a certain desirable reference gets too expensive people look for the next closest thing. For example, the OF Daytona. The folks who are priced out of those are looking at the YM40 RG (126655) as substitute and now they’re trading $10k~+ above retail. Eventually it spread to the entire Rolex catalog offering.

In this case, it’s the people seeking a sub, but opting for the SS YM40.
