Broken GMT
Hi all,
My GMT II is about 4 years old. I bought it from a gray dealer. A few days ago, after adjusting the time, the crown would not go back in. I noticed the O-ring was missing (probably what is making it stuck in the out position). I dropped it off at a local Rolex authorized repair center. They said it needs a "full service" for $850 and $50 for a new crown. They did not give an option to simply fix the crown. They said the movement was "exposed" so it needs a full service. Does that seem right? Is there a warrantee, or is that voided when I am not the original owner (I have the original warrantee card but it is obviously not in my name)? If that is right then I can live with it. I am looking for a sanity check please. |

Warranty runs with the watch not the owner.

I guess your local Rolex ad knows better, you bought from greys do you have the warranty card? It is still on or ever had warranty ?
Even if it is not covered by warranty it is what it is, shit happenes and needs to be fixed, play and pay |

You don't need the card. The watch is under warranty.
You could have it repaired by an independent shop or get a price and decide.

If you have the original warranty card and it is dated less than 5 years ago then you should be covered. Unless they deem the issues to be due to misuse.
You could try a different service Center/AD. |

It’ll be under warranty at that age. You can call your RSC to confirm.

Thanks everyone. I do have the card, I will give them a call. Not sure why the serial number didn't give them that info (age) though?

The warranty only covers movement issues, no? What about water pressure or a failed gasket?

Sorry, but what Rolex Service Center did you take it to in Chicago? As far as I know there is not one. You may have taken it to a Rolex Authorized Dealer but they are not a Service Center. If you bought it 'new' from a grey dealer 4 years ago it may or may not be under warranty. An actual grey dealer like Jomashop offers their own warranty and are not covered by Rolex. But it sounds like you have the card. Assuming the card was somehow scanned when you bought it, it will be in Rolex's system. I've never gone through an AD to get a watch serviced. Call an RSC directly (like the one in Dallas) and send it straight to them. This puts you in charge of the service, not working through a middle man like an AD. Some unscrupulous AD's might charge you the RSC service fee but get it serviced locally and pocket the difference. $850 sounds about right for a GMT service if it is not covered by the warranty. Damaged caused by the owner is not covered. But this sounds like it is covered and should not cost you anything. Well maybe some shipping costs. And the RSC will give you a 2 year warranty on the service. So I'd go straight to the RSC. They can even send you a shipping kit and specific instructions on how to ship it. Make sure you follow those instructions.

OP, this all sounds perfectly right. With the noted exception that this should be warranty work.

I think Rocket Man (post #11) is correct.
This sounds like an AD hoping you don't know your warranty rights, and they wanna charge you for the repairs. Send directly to RSC!! .nic |

One thought is… if there’s a missing gasket/O ring, I can imagine the RSC might claim that the watch has been opened, which may mean the repair is not covered under warranty.
You never really know what’s previously been done to a watch that doesn’t come from an AD. |

Thanks for the replies. I am guilty of mixing term so i apologize. I brought it to C.D Peacock which has a certified Rolex tech (probably also the wrong term) and that is where the estimate is from.
I do not know when the O-ring went missing, I suspect it broke and then got stuck when I pulled the crown and it what caused the crown not to go back in. I will call then on Tuesaday armed with the info I have...... thanks to you all. |
