Incoming - From a Long time ago and a Galaxy far, far away

But it’s more than that. It’s an homage to mom.

This is my story about this watch.

Mom wanted a Lady President a few years ago and she'd learned to ask my help with major purchases. This was way back in 2018 when you could still get a discount on PM. So I helped her get a Lady President YG, MOP Dial, Diamond markers, and bezel. A true stunner. She loved that watch. Meanwhile, she was just as excited about my watch journey as I am. Mom’s are like that.

Our arrangement for when she passed was that I would get the watch to trade toward a man’s watch, and my sis would get all Mom’s jewelry. Mom passed in January 2021 (stroke, she left this world on her own terms - the same as she lived it with gusto). My sis had no idea of our arrangement as she’s not into watches, and was not as close to mom. Yet she was fine with our arrangement. But a few days after mom passed, she decided wants Mom’s watch - so she gives me the cash equivalent. It was on the generous side of the range I suggested. Honestly, I didn’t care how much money she gave me - I was just thrilled she actually wanted mom’s watch.

Mom’s AD and I had become close and I bought 2 Tudors and a Daytona (they liked the way I treated my Mom so they got me a Daytona with 18-month wait and small purchase history).

The AD Suggested this WG DD Meteorite/Diamonds as a men’s proxy to mom’s watch. YG to WG, MOP to Meteorite, Diamonds. When we ordered it, they estimated 4-8 weeks. But things changed quickly in Q1 and Q2 2021. Time dragged and It took 14 months and a lot of sweating. Especially this year as DD prices skyrocketed a thousand dollars per week back in January/February. I was starting to think I’d never get it. I’d heard so much about the smaller AD’s in Jewelry stores losing their status. Etc, etc. It was not looking good.

Last week in LA I wandered the Jewelry District to get ideas of what else I might want. I really only wanted this watch. I didn’t see anything else I really wanted. MSRP is $49.5, but Grey is about $95k-$120k. I was just really panicked - it’s the only watch I want to replace mom’s. It’s the only appropriate varietal. But there is no way I’m going to pull from retirement savings or go into debt for the watch at any price. Mom taught me better.

So, I called my AD to ask if I should recalibrate my desires and expectations. They were so excited when they got my call and exclaimed “I was just about to call you - Your watch will be here tomorrow.” I think they were pretty excited to deliver the news.

So, here it is. And there is my Mom’s with my sis wearing it. Mom would be overjoyed that my sis wanted and got her watch, as well as my choice of men’s watch. We never explored what watch I would get, but I know she’d be thrilled about this one.

It’s not “Dad’s watch” but it’s equally exciting to me. BTW, Dad is still alive and gave me his Rolex OP Date 1500 a few years ago so he could see me enjoy it while he’s alive.

So, now I have Mom’s and Dad’s watches.

I am overjoyed with this particular model and it has so much sentimental value. And I know my Mom would approve very much as well as be as excited as me.

Thanks for listening, and thank you for your sharing my joy. I hope you enjoyed my story.

Love this story. So sorry about the loss of your mom. Your watch is stunning, the best DD configuration in my opinion, and a really lovely way to remember your mom always.

I do love my own meteorite/diamond WG DD, but that baguette version is truly superb!

Lovely story, plus such a happy ending - Congratulations!

I love it! I know it's been a long journey for you, buddy. I'm glad to hear that patience prevailed and the watch finally arrived. While I never had the chance to meet your mom; I know she's proud of you as a son and that her memory lives on with this piece.

And to think; you almost gave up on this watch for a Canipus gold Speedmaster...

Thank you, Brother - yes you were alongside the journey the entire time. And you helped me keep a cool head about it. Talked me off the ledge of making some panic purchases. I'm grateful for true friendships like yours.

I’m sorry to hear about your mom. But you have an amazing outlook and always will have such fond memories.

And huge congratulations on the watch - it’s perfect in every way - the watch itself as well as what it represents.

Wear, enjoy, and remember all the good in the best of health.

Don?
This story is one that deserves to be told. It's somewhat the essence of what makes our watch-collecting nuttiness all worthwhile.
When we were texting the other day, I hope that I communicated how touching this whole situation is . . . while I drooled over the meteorite dial! Oh, my, how I love that!!

Enjoy your every moment with this remembrance of your Mom. And every time you and your Sis get to smile at one another at the significance of it all.

Much love, brother!
