Triplock Crown Position on Submariner

Which way should the Rolex crown point when the submariner triplock crown is fully closed?

Neither of my two subs look like the pic below. One points to 7 o'clock position, while the other points to 10 o'clock.

Consider yourself extremely lucky if they line up. They are not produced to line up, most of the one's I have had are sideways or upside down.

Im pretty sure the crown is not made to line up in any particular fashion. It may just be coincidence that the watch in the photo lines up.

The crown should be at 3 o'clock position, if it's not you got a fake.

Sorry

The crown will only line up straight at 5% of the watches, so don't bother just enjoy the watch.

But soda caps (to use that example) are constructed in a slightly different way. If you look inside the cap, the threads have gaps and run parallel (and hence the cap can end up in different positions depending on the engagement point). A Rolex crown however has just one uninterrupted thread inside. IMO the crown will end up in practically the same position every time unless you tamper with the threads or force it, which may damage the watch.

The position of the crown at the completely closed position changes and advances clockwise with time as the rubber gasket gets thinned with use.

I agree. When I got my sub date, I was absolutely delighted that the crown pointed perfectly straight up.

It should point ... NORTH!

I agree ... it's pot luck; just don't over-tighten it to get it lined up!

Only one of my watches lines up. The watch in the photo may have had the crown loosened for the photo.

That's my theory, too, the crown is unscrewed for photography purposes.

Mine points straight down, 6:00 AM or PM. Whatever, seems we need GMT winding crowns.

I know, I know, I'm leaving now...

So based on all the comments i gather the position of a fully closed crown is completely random. Still I ask, what determines the position? I have to believe that all the crowns are made the same, right?

It depends on how/where the pieces were threaded, i.e. where the crown threading started. Chances are the crown is chucked in random positions thus the thread will be oriented different...

There is a better chance for the crown to be threaded correctly for alignment. The case tube would be trickier since the start point of the thread has to be in the correct position for the crown to align!

Either part, just used the crown for example...

But yeah, mine does not line up, and if it did I'd be impressed...
