If you already have a Sub or SD, Explorer 2. If not, GMT. I am not into collecting two similarly looking watches despite the difference in function.

Yes, I fully agree with you.
I just want to gauge how popular are these two models in the public eyes

A no contest. GMT. Rolex do not perceive to have levels or grades on their watches but by rank you would put the GMT up there and Explorer would be a step or two below.

The 116710LN. It’s not even a contest. The gap would be closer if you chose the polar explorer 2.

Hype vs. Non-Hype; I'd go for the ExpII.

7” wrist or larger, Exp II.
Anything less, GMT.

226570. I’ve never liked or understood the black hands on the black dial Explorer II.

Both great watches but are a long way apart in cost. I prefer the Explorer II for fit and uniqueness. The GMT has shot up in cost because it has been discontinued.

Pound for pound the GMT will always win on here.

Biggest question for you, is can your wrist handle the Exp II?

The GMT is a little more bling with its polished center links. The EXP flies under the radar..

I’d still buy the GMT, it was my first ceramic reference and I wish I never sold it
