what are my options

Hello everyone!
About a month ago, I had no intention of buying a watch. But a couple of life events later, I've decided to carpe the diem, and started to look into Rolex.
I spent some time doing some online research, and settled for the stainless steel daytona with black dials (I don't have facebook or instagram and don't follow the trends I just love the engineering behind the movement).

Fast forward to today, I've been to 5 countries, visited a dozen of store and it's been a huge disappointment, I'm headed back home empty handed. My local AD told me they receive about 5 pieces a month, but in the meantime, they add 50 folks to the waitlist.

So the question here is, what are my options?
- can I enroll on a waitlist with an out of state AD? Do I need to be present?
- how about AD from different countries? Once available, can I buy over the phone and have them ship it?
- I don't have anything else to purchase at the moment (maybe more watches in the future), so I'm not sure how to build a relationship with an AD
- 2nd hand is out of the question

It’s just the market for now. Best is to establish a relationship with your local AD. Many ADs out of state won’t sell to non-locals to cut down on people they don’t know flipping watches.

As for a black ceramic Daytona with no purchase history probably impossible to get. I’ve been waiting for one for 5 years. Is there any other models you’d like? You picked the most in demand and absolute hardest to get out of the entire catalog. Reminds me of this article.

Demand exponentially increased since the article came out and the impossible got even got more impossible if that makes any sense.

There is no such thing as “lock down a price” when waiting for a Rolex. The prices went up this year, and even folks who had a deposit down for a particular reference had to pay the new, higher, price when they picked up their new watch.

I decided to move up to a gold oysterflex Daytona. Still really hard to get but easier then a ceramic. I’ve been offered two different oysterflex Daytona’s (and turned them down) while waiting for the one I requested so hopefully it will come eventually.

If not I agree with the Speedmaster recommendations. There are tons of models and colors and I love mine. Ignoring the hype it is just as beautiful as a ceramic Daytona.

Visit your local ad regularly, without being annoying, and hope for the best. For the meantime, get yourself the new Speedmaster Professional because it’s going to be a long wait for the Daytona imo. You’ll be able to sell the Speedy fairly easily; if one day you do get the call and don’t want to keep two black dial Chronographs. Another option is the Tudor Chrono, but it doesn’t have the same iconic status as the Speedmaster and Daytona

If you specifically want that reference and you want it new from an AD, you would most likely need to first strongly establish yourself as a customer of that AD before a request would even be taken very seriously.

you are lucky man, the watch market is in a trend of correction right now! be patient and wait 2, 3 more months until the price settled down. I think around $32k for a used 2020 black dial ss daytona is good to buy. you are already too late to get into the AD game, go grey.

Grey dealers have unworn stock, technically preowned but you get a watch in new condition.

No chance from AD given your status. Absolutely no reason to sell you one.

Options

1) Grey Market

2) Buy a different chronograph. This shouldn’t be an issue as you are admittedly not influenced by anything other than the movement engineering. There are plenty of more attainable chronos with interesting engineering.

3) Move on from watches altogether. It’s a really tough time to enter the hobby, especially if you have oneitis.

Your AD has the watch, it’s a matter of Will they sell to you. The options are:

1) spend a lot so they have to give to you
2) wait it out and be likable and spend some over time
3) go grey

That’s the cold reality.

I've had both, Daytona and Speedmaster. The other advantage of the Omega rarely mentioned, is that you can actually tell what the time is. Unlike the Rolex, which has difficult-to-see hands.

It's less than unlikely you get the Daytona with no purchase history unless you know the owner of an AD. Even then you would probably wait a year or two.

Zenith Chronomaster, if all you're after an impressive movement, and it's similar looking to a Daytona. You trying to get a Daytona at retail is just a waste of everyone's time.

If it has to be the Daytona-C then it will be Grey Market for you. If you can appreciate other watches that are just as cool and functional but not a Daytona-C then check out the Omega Speedmaster or the Tudor Chronos. I also like the new Breitling Navitimers. I own both the black and white dial Daytona-C's and short of the amazing hype and flexing, I prefer my Speedmaster's and Tudor Chrono's. Good luck.

Look at more watches, more brands, more complications.

Forget trying to pander to an AD. You don't have the money, time or history.

Why do you want a Daytona? Do you need a chronograph? Do you simply like the way it looks? Do you need a date on your watch?
