Icon20 UV Light and Lume on Dials

Over the last couple of days, where we have had some beautiful weather in the Uk thought I would check how the sun and the UV Rays affect the LUME on the watch, and to see how it charges the LUME.

So Since sunday I have used different sun creams & lotionas with different SUN Protection factors and have noticed the higher the factor the lower the LUME and how bright the display is at night. When the sun cream is spread over the glass of the watch.

Hopefully will get to use SPF2 tomorrow and report back how bright the display is tomorrow.

Good idea! I have always wondered about how light affects the Lume I have noticed that sunlight seems to charge a lot better than artificial light. Anyone know why?

Must be the enhanced vitamin D in the sunlight that gives it the extra shiny coat!!!

My first thought is you have too much time on your hands. My second thought is why didn't I do this on my last vacation.

You can for around $10 buy a little LED Ultra Violet (UV) torch that will in a matter of seconds activate the luminova on the dial and hands.

Ultra Violet light is what activates the luminova.

NOTE: Ultra Violet light is dangerous to the human eye so if you do get one of these torches, make sure that it is not directly pointed into anyones eye. It might look harmless and it is a cool blue light that looks beautiful, but some children (or adults) may think it funny to point it at someone as a joke. IT IS NOT A TOY.

Thanks for the info Steve. Also, another (maybe dumb) question... but does the Luminova "wear" out??? In other words, if it is activated more often, does it lose it's properties faster? I would guess so, but thought I would check.

PS. reason I ask, is that soemtimes at night, I like to "charge up" the lume, if I am going to be somewhere dark. If I'm wearing the lume out faster, I may stop doing it as often!!!

Hi John good to see you

I do not think that Luminova has a known life. It seems to go on and on. I don't think I have ever seen anyone report that their Luminova dial will no longer become excited when exposed to UV rays/light.

Tritium would not need any UV rays to excite, but the radiation of the material would start to dim after 11 years. This was a totally different technology from luminova.
