Putting a PM Daytona away for 20 years...
How many can people can afford to turn a PM Daytona into a "Safe Queen" for 20 years. AND resist strapping it on your wrist?
That's my goal! Of course in 20 years said Queen, will be a gift, to my first born Grandchild, not the investment aspect. |

I’d rather use the money to make money then buy the Daytona when he comes of age.

Like wise but to some now Rolex watches are little more than £$€ object things.

If my grandfather handed me a 20 year old Rolex no matter the preference I’d be way more than stoked!!!!! But this is not ever going to happen, my grandparents who were of minor means made me who I am. I can with certainty guarantee a Rolex will be just as revered in 20 years as they are today! |

Another passion of mine is Corvettes. I’ve owned, restored from ground up and driven them thousands of miles. Earning the highest awards on the planet. I am very lucky to have found a very low mileage (17,300 at purchase) ‘71 Big Block 4 sp. As I pulled away from the seller I turned and said, “ no one will see this car for sale in the next 20 years.” Now some 18 years later with a total of 18,500 miles on it, I’ve almost made my goal!
I do buy and hold! lol 😂 |

The consensus here is clearly opposed to the idea, and the large majority here also flipped the question towards the investment aspect....It can be said, they probably can't afford to do this.....
This one line I do think hits the grand slam: "This entire forum is dedicated to people spending what many others regard as excessive amounts of money on what those others consider to be pointless objects." Unless an unforeseen event occurs and my wife or I, find the need for these funds, it will sit in my safe (which isn't easily accessed), collecting dust.... Some may remember the history of my WG Daytona journey, and how the first one I purchased broke after only 52 days on my wrist. I do truly believe this was a sign, showing my disrespect for what I had. At that time, it was just a watch, worn with no real regard for how precious or artistic these small machines are. Yes, there are other manufacturers and one of a kind timepieces, but I like Rolex brand for as long as I can remember.... I do thank every single post here, it's the individual thoughts and ideas I love to listen to and learn! Only 225 months to go! |

Rather wear a watch for 20 years and then gift it to someone special.

Sounds like a nice idea in theory. Hopefully the kid gives a damn about watches, particularly Rolexes and more particularly Daytonas. Seems like a lot of money spent in the hopes he does.
If he does like watches, chances are it will mean more if he identifies the watch with you from seeing you wear it. |

You want the kid to think you were rich enough to put one aside rather than be proud to inherit something he saw you wear? Sounds like it’s all about you...

I think the watch would mean more to your grandchild if you wore and enjoyed it and then passed it on.

If you focussed on becoming a celebrity or someone in the public eye you could add more value than stickers ever could.
I think I’d rather wear it. Look at the oak collection; watches are classed as, as new or new old stock. I’ve had the pleasure of viewing these watches up close and they have scratches, they’ve been worn a little. |

It’s a gamble. It’s quite possible (likely?) unknown grandchild might have no use for it and immediately sell it.
If you really want to give your grandkid something prehistoric, maybe an actual dinosaur fossil or a meteorite dial Daytona? |

Hmm I don’t know if you’re grandchild will share the sentiment of “my grandfather was able to afford to keep this brand new in box” and in the same way that you see it - in 20 years it will just be an old (but new) watch. I would guess he would want the latest and greatest as most do these days.
If I were going down that route I would give him my watch that’s he’s actually seen me wearing over the last 20 years - I think that would be more sentimental. Regardless it’s your decision to make and I’m sure he won’t turn his nose up at it. It’s nice to do nice things for people regardless :) |

I think it means more to you to be able to put it away than it’ll ever mean to your Grandchild. If history is any indicator I think it shows that progeny never appreciates wealth they didn’t earn.

I’d find it difficult to start wearing a twenty year old unworn watch. I bought an unused collectable camera then bought another used one to actually use.
