Will work or not??
Only theoretical scenario
In theory you are small spender in AD. Over 2 years you bought 3 watches ( whatever Tudor, Omega or IWC). You are registered for Explorer I or II ( something not very hard to get but still people have to wait). You waiting 1-2 years but you didn’t get your Rolex. So, you are going to the AD and told them that if they will not sell you that Rolex you will go away and buy it on grey market. Are they bring something from the back ( maybe not that watch you want but DJ 36 or Air King) or AD manager will let you leave and they will lose a costumer. What reaction will AD take? What do you think about this? |

You cannot know for sure and neither can we.
I'd be very firm on the exact watch that I want and discuss a reasonable time frame for them to deliver. I would NOT buy whatever thrown at me.

No reason to play that game and you run the risk of negating the other purchases and never getting a watch. Go in to the AD and have a conversation about expectations, yours and the AD's. Ask for a time frame, remind them of your spend history and see what they say. If they say sometime in the future and no specifics ask to speak to the manager and have a similar respectful conversation with them. You will have a feel when you leave if a watch is in the future or they are just stringing you along. Either way you will want watches in the future so why threaten or catch an attitude just smile and thank them and do what is in your best interest. Contact a Trusted Seller, negotiate your best price and buy the watch if the AD does not come through. You will get a call from the AD eventually but if you go the Trusted Seller route just tell the AD that another watch is what you want and start the waiting game all over. Never tell the AD any of your buying practices. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

If you try that 'plan' OP they'll just say "Buh Bye!" ADs don't care, their lists are still long (and distinguished )

Explorer prices have also fallen recently. Should be able to find one for a very modest markup over [MSRP+Tax] |

Recent video. Guy observes that ADs always tell him "There nothing in stock!" but yet he sees people in the back room being shown watches all day long.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YrcRzzHddhw Fact: If you are small fry, ADs will lie to your face about their stock. They have plenty of watches, just not for you. Once the grey prices hit your threshold, buy and move on with your life. |

In fact, the same thing happened to me! Myself and another guy were all casually talking to the same SA. All 3 of us were discussing the current market, various hot SS model watches and other watch topics. The SA also mentioned to us that the only thing they had in stock was an all YG ladies DJ on President bracelet, which just sold. Nothing else in stock. I eventually left and browsed the store looking at other brands of watches they had. At a later point, I circled back around to the Rolex area and the same SA and the same customer were in the back office looking at watches. I could see they had a coffin on the table. When I peeked back there closer, the SA gave me the stink eye and lowered the watch in his hands so that I couldn't see what it was. Sure, that was a little concerning, but we all know the games with Rolex and I was not surprised. |

Why would anyone buy something they do not want?
The desperation is clear.

I think that the AD reaction is subjective to the actual AD and the market they are in. Some ADs don’t ind about losing a customer because there will be another to take your place. Some may bring something from the back to see if you’re interested, and some will make an effort to get you what you want.
Best thing is 1William’s advice. Have a respectful conversation with your AD and lay out expectations. |

You need to buy a white Daytona grey and go talk to them about your explorer. You'll get it then.

Strange times.
I’d be clear about what I want and either wait it out, or seek out a new AD. If I’m really impatient, I’d go gray I guess. I wouldn’t buy any watch they offered up as a runner up |

Dont buy what you dont want.
Difference between not having anything in stock and watches being sold in the display rooms to existing clients that have been waiting. Nobody knows for sure but it would be quite unusual for any AD not to deliver an explorer even to a new customer. Trouble with that watch is, we are only a couple of years in (well not even that) and Rolex will be servicing the higher than typical demand for this piece with their existing good clients. |
