116500 Daytona as a daily

When I purchased my white faced stainless Daytona. I told the AD my plan to use it as my daily watch abs they seemed surprised and suggested that most people do not daily it. Well it has been my daily for about a week now.

Here are my reasons for using it as a daily. My favorite Rolex I have is my YG Daytona but obviously I don’t want to wear a YG watch everywhere I go. I have longed for the stainless version for years because of this. Second, the only other stainless Rolexes I own are the Hulk abs the Pepsi. I enjoy these watches but sometimes I prefer not to have the bright colors. In my opinion the perfect daily Rolex is stainless and black, like a LN submariner or an Explorer. In a perfect world I would ask my AD for an LN submariner and that would be a great daily. However, I like the Daytona even more because it wears smaller.

I really don’t care if the watch shows regular wear and tear of daily use. I bought it to enjoy. The only negative aspect I can think of is that the watch is very recognizable. At this point, it has become a social media icon so it may draw unwanted attention.

What do you guys think? Who out there is using this watch as a daily? Also, if you are an owner but do not wear it daily, why not?

Why not? Some percentage of owners won't wear it because its an "investment" or whatever. Wear it and love it as intended.

My old man has worn the same Day-Date for the past 40 or so years, and it rarely comes off his wrist. I saw him gardening in the thing growing up in the 80s and 90s. And it isn't even a sports watch.

The beauty of Rolex is that they're made to take a hit. If you want to wear it every day, I think you should feel free to do so.

It’s a watch that’s meant to be daily-ed:
- It wears more comfortably than most sport models
- The chronograph is actually kind of useful
- It doesn’t scream Rolex from a distance
But, it’s a (market) $30k watch. Which complicates things.

It is a watch, wear it or don’t.

You missed the sarcasm, well intended in a nice way. All Rolex watches are made to be worn every day for life. Whether they are or aren't, is totally up to the owner, not to the watch..

What do I think? That I just wasted 45 seconds of my life reading this post.

I think if you look back at your life you will find that much more than 45 seconds of it has been wasted. Have a great day

Not sure why you need to be so passive-aggressive towards some of the other posters...? You asked for an opinion in a public forum and you get them. Some of them more to your liking, some (and perhaps justifiably so) a bit smart-assy...

But asking what we think of you wearing a watch that a lot of people pine for as a daily... Not sure what you were hoping for? Congratulatory notes on your collection?

At the end - only you can make the decision. It's a perfectly nice watch to wear daily without being overly concerned about it being able to withstand a knock or two. That said - would everyone wear a $30k market value piece to hit a bar, play sports or do yard work...? No.

No argument there, but it’s been fun all the same. Apologies for the snarky comment but it read something like this: “I own a yellow gold watch but obviously don’t wear it everyday.” Why not? This is a pretty big assumption.

A 116500 white dial is too recognizable for daily wear because people will steal it? You said you also have a 116610lv and a Pepsi, explain how those are not just a recognizable?

TBH the post just read like a weird brag on what you own.

I’m 42 years old and the two Rolex I own are a YG Day Date and a 116500 white dial and I wear them all the time. Thus, I don’t understand why you are saying they aren’t good for daily wear. I totally disagree and don’t get why you’d buy them if not to wear them.

To say “weird brag” is apologizing but throwing in one more insult. I am not here to brag I’m here to talk about watches. If I wanted to brag watches would be the last thing that I would bring up because it’s insignificant. However, this is a watch forum where people talk about watches and in most cases the watches they own. Perhaps if you have some other insult to toss you can just p.m. me. Thank you

It’s because of people like you I haven’t been on here in months. The OP has done absolutely no harm in asking this question. Nothing has changed on here. This forum has some real experts and some lovely people. Unfortunately it also has a reputation for being non approachable which has been evidenced by you and that other non helpful person above who provided a similar answer.

To the OP, congratulations mate if you aren’t bothered about polished centre links looking pristine then go for it. Like someone else said this watch is designed to be a daily wearer. Enjoy!

I bought my 116503 last year and wore it as a daily for a while. But then I started getting some scratches and kind of wigged out over it. Anyway, I frequently do daily wear it, but it's part of a rotation between all of my watches and I have learned that it depends on what I am doing that day. If I am out on the construction yard, then nope, not gonna chance dinging that watch on an excavator. If I am just out supervising, then yeah, I will wear it.

So, depends on what I feel like wearing and what I am doing, but yeah, I will daily my Daytona.

I guess it comes down to how comfortable you are with that amount of cash sitting on your wrist in your day-to-day life, and also what your day-to-day life entails.

Purely on a capability basis, pretty much every Rolex professional watch is as tough as any mechanical watch can hope to be, so in that regard it can deal with most things a "normal" life will throw at it. Ultimately it comes down to, a) how protective you are of your watch (wear/scratches, etc), b) your comfort with having tens of thousands of pounds/dollars on your wrist all day every day, and c) your lifestyle - i.e. you may feel more comfortable with it if your life is all office meetings and yacht clubs, as opposed to road maintenance and mountain biking.

The only reason I don’t daily mine is that I enjoy rotating watches often. With your superb collection I struggle not to wear the others too

Why do you need “reasons” to daily any modern rolex… especially a ss one.

I daily mine because its the perfect lowkey watch for the general population (no bright colors). Only watch ppl would recognize it. The avg person would recognize a dj or dd or sub over it.

They’re all just watches. Watches are meant to be worn. Daily, weekly, monthly, whenever.

Every Rolex could be a daily watch. They just work but the Daytona might even be especially good as a daily because of its comfort on the wrist. Certainly the SS Daytona could be your one and only Rolex and be very content the rest of your life.

How is this not meant to be a daily? It's a very small plain jane watch with standard oyster case and oyster bracelet and durable ceramic bezel. It's not flashy. It's a clear daily type watch. Confused by your AD.

There’s two camps here.

The “it’s an investment” crowd - and the “my grail watch” crowd.

The grail watch people buy it to wear whenever they want, daily, weekly, to the beach, on vacation etc… This is how I wear my 116500.

The “investment crowd” don’t care about the watch, they care about the value and they don’t wear it at all, some even plaster it with stickers and plastic to avoid micro scratches.

Which camp are you in?

EDIT: I’ll add that being in the grail watch crowd doesn’t mean you don’t take care of the watch, of course you do handle it with care and make sure not to scratch it up etc, but if it does happen its all just part of the experience.

How about those who want to wear the watch for what it is? You neglected to consider them.

I’d say those who want to wear the watch for what it is fall under the grail watch category. If someone is just choosing to ignore the clout of this model they could be taken as pretentious.

Sounds as if the AD is trying to postpose the inevitable reduction of demand by pusing the investment angle. Nothing like people hording their watches to reduce availability and make certain there's no challenge in selling. Seems like a particularly self centered opinion on the part of the AD.

I've been daily-ing a white metal Daytona for 5 1/2 years and enjoy it very much. Since it's my favorite watch, and I don't have 5, 10 or 20 in a box (NTTAWWT), it's simple: I love it so I wear and enjoy it. I don't wear it exercising or I suppose if I'm going to be in sketchy neighborhood, but then again, I don't really find myself in those neighborhoods. I'm sure I haven't had a day that it wasn't on my wrist since I got it.
