Icon5 Thoughts on spouses giving Rolexes or other nice watch as ‘engagement wed rings’

I don’t like it.

A wedding day gift or anniversary gift, yes.

But watch Bros and Bro-ettes using watches as the engagement or wedding ‘rings’ is nonsense.

What say you all!?!?

I don't need a piece of metal to remind me that I love someone and that I'd do anything for that person or vice versa.

My partner and I didn't do engagement or wedding rings...just one of the numerous things that I love about her and that she loves about me.

But to each, their own.

No - that’s just another example of gross consumerism.

Some things are well established in our culture like a gold wedding band or engagement ring. Even getting a gold watch at retirement is a long standing tradition.

This year will be my 39th anniversary. If she wants to give watches to each other to mark the occasion, I'm good with that. But not as a engagement token. I'm traditional, engagement ring for me.

As an "engagement" or "wedding" gift sure, but it's no substitute for a ring.

We could not afford a Rolex back when we got married. (Well - yes we could but we saved up for a house instead.)

Nothing says, "this marriage won't work", like a watch as an engagement ring does.

Why in the world would it say that? It’s not like a huge percentages of ring-only marriages work out either.
Engagement rings are a throwback to a time when they basically were a mark of ownership, because betrothals were longer. I’ve got no problem if a couple wants to make it a little more equal and have the woman gift a man a watch instead of a ring.

I have no idea why one would think someone’s desire to gift or receive a watch would have anything to do with their commitment to their partner or the marriage.

I don't see why not, it's their money and can spend any way they see fit.

Though while we are on the topic of engagement rings, diamonds are the biggest scam known to man! They are not rare and nor should they be expensive as they are

Sadly diamond engagement rings are so ingrained into our culture through the greatest marketing scam produced by De Beers

The exact same thing could easily be said about Rolex. Limiting supply to keep prices high.

Wedding rings for a marriage.

Separately though, I was lucky enough to to have been bought a wedding day gift from my wife - was a Datejust. I bought her diamond earrings.

I didn't purchase an engagement ring. The wedding ring was a paupers ring.

She loved the TT DJ as an anniversary gift.

I'm a late 20s bachelor so this is all hypothetical to me. But I'd love a watch as a substitute for an engagement ring.

Wedding customs and jewelry meaning is so cultural and variances are abound.

It's just a way to postpone getting married.

Maybe next year babe, we'll get Rolexes. Ha Ha

It's a complete and utter non issue, people can do what they want and in the scheme of things the amount of people doing it is vanishingly small as to make the point moot.

Heck if a wife to be can worm her way round the AD mayhem and make a special occasion even more memorable why not? And as I don’t remember (as the man) getting anything at all for the engagement I’m even more into this direction of travel.
