What do you think, guys? I need your opinions.

I really want to get a strap watch. Something a little sporty and a little dressy. I would love a panny 111 but it's a little too pricey for me to swing it now. I've narrowed my choices down to these two (at least for now).

The Railmaster has a cool vintage look to it, I think. I like the 12, 3, 6, 9 configuration and I can switch back and forth from brown strap to black. If it had a seconds hand subdial at the 6:00 o'clock position in the 39mm size it would be the winner without a doubt.

The speedy has some great history too it and looks great on a strap IMHO. I already have a chrono strap watch in the Tutima, but I think the speedy has a different look altogether.

Give me your thoughts if you will. You guys have always come through in the past and I know you will now too.

I really want a 38mm to 40mm watch, give or take a mm that's got some heft and presence to it, but not too much. Something a little sporty that can be worn with jeans but that can be a little dressy too. If you guys have other options, in this price range ($2500 to $3000 LIST) please, tell me what they are.

Thanks

Craig

Both of these are excellent watches. If i were to choose one i would buy a gently used speedy though because:
i) can pick up one for around $1500 and if you sell it you wont lose any $$$
ii) it is one of the most importnat watches historically in 20th century and one of the toughest chronos
iii) can be worn for dress and sporty
iv) looks cool with lots of different straps.

i vote speedy

Good choices CJ! So you want a black dial eh?
Another option (if you're patient enough to search for it) ...
Two weeks ago I was eyeing this classic beauty at Ebay. My oh my was I salivating at this. If I didn't have an Evolution yet, I sure would have gotten this in a heartbeat. I had to firmly hold back on this ...

Craig, I'm going to show some(a lot?) of bias here, but I think the Speedmaster Pro is one of the best most rugged watches out there.

The Speedmaster, at It's price point, gives the best bang for the buck I seen in a chronograph. The manual wind 1861 movement is a real work horse.
It's a watch that can dress up or down easily and even at it's size is just amazingly comfortable on the wrist.

Unlike the Railmaster (a different style) the Speedmaster lends itself to a velco or NATO strap IMO should you want to go that way.

Of course, there is that history of the Speedmaster that no other watch can claim.

I'm going to have to vote speedmaster as well

It's just a fantastic looking watch with great history behind it, as the guys have said. It's also very, very comfortable to wear & sits just perfect on the wrist. I must admit that while the railmaster is a bloody nice watch, I just can't get over the broad-arrow style hands. There is nothing I can fault about my speedmaster. Mamas was right too, you can pick up a used one for a good price, and they'll still hold their value relatively well IMO. It fits on a strap just as well too. Omega made a double-ridged shark with curved ends that was the duck's nuts! It also looks great on a nice, thick brown or alligator too. Just to make things more difficult....

http://www.omega-addict.com/reviews/.../article3.html

And...

Best of luck pal
I'm still hankering for a 111 here too but my priorities are elsewhere at the moment, but, everytime I look at the speedy it still excites me as much as it did when I bought it.

If the PAM is what you want, save up till you can get the PAM. Otherwise you'll get the Omega, be happy with it, then within a year or so want to sell it and get the PAM.

I have the PAM111H and am very happy with it

Good advice, Spencer, thanks But, the Pam is on the horizon, this will be an in addition to watch. Even if I had the Pam, I'd be getting this. I really like a lot about Panerai and do want one. But, It won't be as much of a daily wearer for me. I'm having alot of trouble getting past the size.

You could always get a 40mm PAM

I have to go with the Railmaster on this one.
Purely on estheticss.
I like the clean dial, the 3,6,9,12 hour markers etc.
IMO, you would be happier with the RM also. You have mentioned a few times around here, you like the hour markers.
You do already have the Chrono and the RM is still different from the Pannie you are looking at

Well Craig,

I think they are both very attractive, but if the Speedy appeals to you, then go for it. Get both, the strap and original bracelet....then you will have a nice option.

By the same token, however, if you feel the Chrono function is "useless and redundant" to you, then the Railmaster with black dial and black strap would be my choice.

Good luck, pal.

JJ

My first choice would be for the Speedy. It's a great watch with a ton of history behind it. However, it would have to be on the original braclet. The Speedy on a strap just doesn't cut it for me. The railmaster on the other hand looks great on a strap. Just my .02

Well, Craig, if it comes down to the RM and the Speedy, my vote's for the Speedy. On the other hand, look at Lol-x's 79180 and there is in fact a black dial for the Tudor.

I vote for a Speedy for many reasons stated above but also for the simple reason that if you get an RM, once you get a panny, I would bet the RM would gather dust, since they both have simple arabic type dials.

But more to the point, I'd be happy with what I have right now and wait a bit longer for a Panerai. Believe me... if anyone knows about waiting for one, it's me.

I'm going to swim against the stream on this one, Craig. If you want something that's a bit dressy, I would go with the RM. I just don't see the Speedy as a dressy watch, even with a strap (and NOT a brown strap with that black dial, please).

This is contra to my normal inclination, since I love complications, but sometimes, you gotta go simple for certain uses.

If you're going to wear this as more of a dressy watch, go with the RM; if you'll wear it more as a sport watch, go with the Speedy. Either one is a good watch. You can't go wrong with either one.

So I guess you don't like the traditional Fleiger look then, eh?

I used to balk at the brown strap, black dial thing... now I quite like it.

Thank you, everyone, for all your help. I knew I could count on you guys

But, with indecision comes confusion and when confused, one is guaranteed to make bad decisions. Neither of the two is really screaming at me at the moment. So, I think the wisest thing to do here is wait a bit and really go our and experiment with lots of options and let the watch tell me which one to bring home. As soon as I figure it out, you guys will be the first to know

Well I personally like both but would choose the Speedy, but if you could
go just a little bit bigger the aqua Terra is a fine looking watch.

Now there's a good suggestion. The BA has an excellent movement from Omega.
