Tall ships in Boston [Lots of images]

After an on and off period where the City would not pay for security the Convention Center stepped up with the cash and the Tall Ships came to town for one, not the usual two weeks. The City predicted 400,000 people would go to the waterfront and were wrong....2,500,000 showed up, jump starting the tourist economy.

We went to see them Saturday and I attach a few shots. We did queue to go aboard the Russian ship--Kruzenshtern. We had a great time chatting with the very polite young Russian sailors who all were 19 years old. You will see a shots of a couple of them with my fellow tourists. I told them to put their arms around the 'girls' figuring it would feel good after weeks at sea....... The young lass reported that their grip was quite firm. I thought of Greg [Mosco...]

Looks like it would have been a great experience touring the ships! Did you have a great time and which ship did you like better?

The weather was great we had a great time. People were in good spirits. I liked the Russian Ship as I was struck by the seriousness of the young kids on the crew. We also liked the beauty of the Argentinian, Brazilian, Portuguese and Romanian vessels. What was great is that immigrants from the different countries gravitated to their 'home' ship. The Russian ship was overrun by local Russian emigres, ditto Portuguese and Brazilian [Boston has a large population from all these countries]. We had a lovely young Russian girl [9?] prompted by her proud Dad, acting as interpreter.

The only draw back were the pirates...

Fantastic photos. We had the Tall Ships in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, where I grew up, in the late-80s, and it just did wonders for the place in terms of tourism.

I can remember the Kruzehnshtern, but I also seem to remember an equally big Soviet (as it was then) training ship. Two house points and go to the top of the class for anyone who can help.

The Russians seem to have a few:
the Pallada, the Nadezhda and the Mir

Old Ironsides the oldest commissioned? ship in the US Navy kept an 'eye' on all our guests.

Might have been the 4 masted barque Sedov, their biggest.

My pleasure Allan. The final estimate of visitors to the event was 3,200,000! Businesses around the waterfront reported doing more business in a couple of days than the previous 6 months!

Very cool...I was at the Tall Ships festival in Port Alberni, BC a few years ago. My favorite memory was being on a sail boat for the first time as we were chasing the ships during the mock battle.

Wow that's very nice ships, thanks for sharing!
I wonder if they can sail those to Australia without a wreck? :-)

They certainly can, the ships in the first fleet were around a third that size and they made it OK

The Cuauhtémoc, an 18th century-style tall ship from Mexico, has anchored this week in San Francisco on a goodwill mission. I am hoping that I will be able to get some free time to see the ship.
