Rolex Day date 118239 dial choices

Hi all, I’m interested to know if you were going to send in your 118239 white gold Day date 36mm in for service, but were also considering doing a dial change that was available for that model knowing that RSC would be keeping the original dial if they did the dial swap, which of these dials would you choose based on dial legibility and everyday wear factored in? Thank you.

It is a Day-Date, I would choose something with diamonds!

I’m not really a diamond person, but if I was, it would be the straight baguette dial on the DD40.

I personally wouldn’t do a dial swap unless I could keep the original.

You never mentioned what dial you have now but if you’re going to go through with it I would say just get whatever color you like best. The darker dials will show the hands better if you’re worried about legibility.

I currently have it on the silver dial.

I actually like that dial so I guess I’m the wrong person to ask.

With that said, silver and black are classic/safe dial tones so perhaps try something with some pop? The blue would be my choice for something that pops a little more but is still classy enough to stand the test of time.

I would not change it unless it is for a baguette black, blue, or silver dial an exotic meteorite dial.

I’m not a fan of the diamond dial options on the Daydate 36mm. It feels too cramped. I think they look better on the 40mm, that’s just me.

It crossed my mind, but worried that it could feel like a fad after awhile.

You can’t go wrong. I just had RSC put the blue wave Arabic dial on my 118209 and am very happy with the result. Had the blue one (you posted above) prior—also really nice.

Maybe the way to think about it is in terms of what you’re likely to wear with it—? Black and silver are pretty neutral—the other options may be a little more limiting-? If you’re someone who thinks about such things. (I’m not—I don’t coordinate my watches with what I’m wearing.)

It's funny that you posted this, because I started a post about dial options on DD36's yesterday and then abandoned it.

I'm a big fan of the somewhat unique dials they've done (Jubilee dials, black pyramid dials, etc.).

A lot of the decision for me would depend on what else was in my collection. Of the 4 above, I have 5 black, 7 blue, and 3 silver dials in my collection; but really don't have a red, so the red would be really different and would look really sharp against the WG IMO. But, it's also kind of loud and is a statement color - which isn't for everyone.

That is funny about the post! I’ve had so many different watch variations move in and out of my collection that did or didn’t bond with me for whatever reason. I feel like I have done black, blue, and white enough. It can be a habit to fall back towards the safer colors. It’s unfortunate that the color variations get limited to the model numbers they are assigned to and then eventually phased out, so you are stuck with a small number of set choices with Rolex. That being said, I will probably inquire about the availability of the red dial with RSC.

I sold my 18239 with a silver Roman dial a couple of years ago and then sold my 18238 earlier this year to fund the purchase of my first Patek. The 18238 had a cream jubilee dial with gold Arabic numerals. I LOVED that watch and dial and it was hard to part with.

As soon as it was gone, I missed it (it was the only YG watch in my collection) and I started on the lookout for my next one. I found a 18238 last week with a red vignette dial that I really liked, but my other half vetoed it. Then found a 118238 with the black pyramid dial and, even though I really don't need another black dial, the pyramid motif makes it different enough that I think I'll like it.

Post pics when you get your watch back! Can't wait to see!

Pyramid dials rock, but especially with yellow gold.

Cherry, I think its exclusive to your model, other colors are more run-of-the-mill.

I should have posted pictures of actual watches for visual reference. The silver one is mine. The blue and cherry are screen grabs off the internet.

Meteorite masterpiece dial. This was mine for a long time, and the only watch I wore for a couple years. Awesome dial that never got old… until I decided to get a platinum DD40.
