A question of tact.
I am meeting a high school friend I have not seen in like 17 years. He was a watch nut since we were kids growing up-he had the first Tag I had ever seen and years later bought on to start my collection. The thing is from the talks we have had on the phone I have done a bit better for myself than he has. I don't want to look like I am showing off or being boastful so should I leave the watches home?
I am told I come off a bit abrasive at times so I don't want to compound the issue. Any suggestions. I was thinking of wearing the SS Sub because he is a watch guy but I feel I might seem like I'm rubbing it in his face which is not the kind of person I am. All comments appreciated. |

If he knows you well (which it sounds like he does), then he will understand you are not trying to show off, etc. if you do wear your Sub. Personally, I would wear the SS Sub !

Relax, be yourself, and wear whichever watch you'd normally wear.
Doesn't get any more simple than that.

Well, as long as you already come off as abrasive....wear your best Rolex and rub his face in it. Just meet your friend and be humble. |

If he was a watch nut, then I think you SHOULD wear the SS sub, he'll probably be interested in seeing it. I'm sure you won't wave it in his face, and if the topic never comes up then don't approach it, but it's not like you're wearing a Leapord Daytona Bling machine or anything. A SS sub is a calssic-fine timepiece, but hardly a watch that shouts: "Hey Look at me! I did better then you!"

If you look at it objectively, wearing your Rolex and giving him the pleasure of seeing it is not more powerful than the pain that might be caused from feelings of jealousy/resentment on his part.

Wear the Rolex but be sensitive to him and be humble. I would not mention that I was wearing a Rolex unless he commented on it.

If you're that concerned then you could put the watch in your pocket when you meet.

Be yourself and wear whatever you would normally wear. If you hide your watches now and do rekindle your friendship; how long will you hide your watches for? Until he can afford one??

Thanks for all your thoughts on the subject. I think I'm going to wear the sub with a long sleeve shirt. Should be subdued enough. I shall report back on how it goes.

IMO it would depend upon how well he's doing for himself. If the guy is struggling to make ends meet then I'd leave the Rolex at home until we did some more 'catching up'. If he's just in a job that doesn't may much, but is doing Ok financially, I'd wear the Sub.

If what watch you are wearing comes between a friendship maybe you were never really that good of friends to begin with. Wear the Sub and don't make a big deal out of it.
