For those that say Tudor is what Rolex used to be…
It’s not, period.
Yes, Rolex made and still makes tool watches. Yes, Tudor makes tool watches … and so does Victorinox, Squale, Hamilton, Tag Heuer, et al. But… Rolex has always been a luxury brand … always. Tudor is and always has been positioned as a near luxury brand. Saying Tudor is what Rolex was, is the same as saying Tag Heuer is what Rolex was. Ahh yes. Haven’t seen a good Tudor bash thread in a while. Wouldn’t be TRF without one after all

All I know is, I had Rolex In the 90’s & Noughties but the Tudor BB58 & the BB Pro I have now have better movements, bracelets / clasps than those watches did. As much as I like the several modern Rolex watches I have now, the Tudor’s feel closer to the mix of luxury & tool watches that Rolex used to be. My modern Rolex watches feel more like jewellery.

Rolex have not always been a luxury brand. They made reliable, dependable, rugged tool watches. They do still, but there's more bling incorporated and all the tool watches have PM and sometimes jewel encrusted counterparts. For a modern, no nonsense watch that gets back to the kind of functional and aesthetic fundamentals that Rolex used to major on, look no further than Tudor. |

1. And all-gold watch has always been a luxury watch.
2. There were once activities for which only a Rolex would do, making it a necessity. 3. The need for a Rolex aside, participating in those activities (deep sea diving, exploring, travel) has always been largely a luxury (at least when done recreationally). |

If the need for such a proclamation makes you feel better knock yourself out.

Rolex is a Rolex, Tudor is a Tudor. They are two separate brands and places in the market.

Why are some rolex owners so insecure about Tudor?

There are lots of people who view Tudor as a “poor man’s Rolex,” including my brother in law. I have two responses:
1. I mean, yeah, I can’t afford to buy lots of Rolexes. But a Chrono and Ranger within a month is attainable. A Daytona is a bigger spend and I can’t get one at retail anyway. If one were offered, I would make it work. But I’m not holding my breath. 2. I mean, whatever, maybe I explain why Hans Wildorf started Tudor. But probably not. I love my Rolexes and I love my Tudors. I also love my $20 Casio Worldtimer. I love watches. |

This. I have had three Tudors over the years including a Chrono and Hydronaut from the Tiger era and a Heritage Chrono when they first came out. Although I don’t have them anymore I certainly enjoyed them as episodes in my love of mechanical watches going back to my teens.
I was at a large outdoor event over the weekend and of course I can’t help but notice what’s on peoples’ wrists. My coolest spot was a blue dial Seiko Turtle on what looked to be an aftermarket rubber strap that had a calendar printed on it, very cool. I was wearing my red OP41 on Saturday and BLRO on Sunday and got zero accolades from anyone. |

Having both Rolex and Tudor in my collection, I would say both are good solid brand with excellent built. Love them both. Just a matter of preference in design and how easy are you with your wallet.

I have to disagree. The quality of the new Tudor line surpasses that of the 5 digit Rolex line in my opinion.

I don't think of my my BB58 as a Rolex but do see them having moved up into the luxury watch category. Once you move away from borrowing ETA and Sellita movements, it's up a notch. They do still borrow movements for some models but I suspect that will all change sooner or later.

I love both- for what they are. If we take an honest hard look at Tudor since the introduction of the BB58 it’s hard to not acknowledge Tudor is doing a lot right.

May I say that the first statement of this post is totally subjective and then ridiculous ? I don’t see any luxury only when I look back on Rolex 4 or 5 digits clasps. My first tudor was purchased after 6 Rolexes in my collection, and from what I can see with a loupe or I can feel wearing and handle it, this is serious stuff. I agree with those mentioning Rolex now feel more like jewelry stuff, and I do like them this way no offense. But seriously… I can see in less than 5 years people will see Tudor totally differently.
