Both manually typing the image tag and copy/paste image tags within the message have failed to work for me at least once in the past.
I would suggest you try the Insert Image icon at the top of your message box. You may also want to make sure you add the apppripriate file extension. for instance my website gallery does not append .jpg so I manually add '.jpg' within the aforementioned box.

 I was able to get the photo above from photobucket. Just right-click on the photo and click on properties. Copy the link, click on the 'image' icon (the little picture with the mountains) and paste the link in there.
