Offered a watch at AD - thoughts?

Hi everyone

I have never bought at a Rolex AD before and was recently offered a Sub WG(after being on waitlist for a regular sub for 1 year) at my local dealer. I did mention to him that I might also be interested in the WG, so he is not offering it out of the blue.

I really like the watch but it’s not a watch I would like to wear for everyday use.
So my question is, would you guys buy the watch to "get a foot in the door" with the dealer and get the chance to be offered some of the less accessible watches that I’m interested in down the road?

My plan is to acquire and keep 5-10 Rolex watches over the next 10-15 year period. So the WG sub I would probably just put away in a box only using it for special occasions.

All thoughts appreciated.

I would buy the watch and put in the safe like what you planned.

Sub WG is actually not that bad considering how many sub steel are out there.

Also, get a foot in the door theory is true. If you turn it down, you might never get what you truly want

I would NEVER buy a watch I don't really want. The problem is that the ADs are supposed to not sell to flippers. So if you flip it and they find out, your shot at getting the watches you really want actually goes down. I have turned down several offers in the past year and STILL got a GMT.

I think being transparent and honest is best in this case.

Welcome to the forum Adam.

Personally if it’s a watch you want I’d buy and and wear it as a daily. That one really flies under the radar so to speak.

That's a lot of money for a watch you don't plan on wearing that often, but if you don't mind just putting it away for special occasions, then sure, go for it!

I wouldn’t buy anything I didn’t genuinely want and intended to wear.

I'd wear it, mostly because it looks just like SS.

Looks like you're in Germany? There's a huge variable across the spectrum of what can happen. I have heard for some reason stainless sports is very difficult where you are.

A lot of people won't do it. Some will. There's no doubt the white gold sub is way more special than a submariner. Modern black submariner is no slouch, but they're a dime a dozen, like a bmw 3 series, but more reliable. You can keep trying and waiting for the one that you actually want. But there's no doubt a precious metal piece will get your foot in the door more than saying "no" or buying a stainless piece.

I don't think there's a wrong decision either way. Every rep, AD, AD location I find behaves slightly differently.

Option A: you take the precious metal sub, take a hit of $8k on value, you ask for an allocation of something else for next year. You might get it and that would be awesome. However, they may cuck you a longer period of time and not offer you what you want because their spending threshold is higher or history threshold is longer.

Option B: you take nothing. You don't waste the $40k of cash needed to hold a white gold watch. You wait for your sub. Maybe you get it! Maybe it helps you establish relationship. Maybe you get it and then later they tell you stainless sports don't build history and you'll have to dip in again. Or maybe they don't call you again.

It's hard to say man.

I had the same offer, ADs are trying to give the WG sub out like candy! Love the watch, but 40k is a serious investment.

Yup, these are going well under list price BNIB on the UK grey market. No wonder they’re pushing them.

Why a WG Sub cannot be worn as a daily ?

Same situation, bought the WG Sub, I'm happy to wear it daily, toke it with me while traveling to Italy and defenitly is under the radar.
The AD is happy and a month later offered my second request, a Milgauss, I'm waiting now for the right hand GMT.
So if you can, buy it!

Truth ….

I never could understand the whole WG thing - unless you’re allergic to SS - what’s the point ?

Wait for the SS and save your coin …

the WG sub can easily handle day to day wear. If you like it, but it and rock it. I know I do...

In my eyes a sub is a great daily wearer but not a great special occasion piece. I'd make up my mind if I wanted SS or WG and get the one I really want and wear it regularly. Too much money to just get a foot into an AD door and put it away in a box.

Well... you did say you were interested in WG so they came through. If you can afford it, buy it. If its a stretch financially then don't buy it. WG wears very different to SS, it definitely scratches and wears a lot faster. Only you can answer these questions. I wouldn't buy a watch I didnt intend to wear. Instead of 5-10 Rolex Id get maybe 2.. one of them a WG sub for daily

Have you tried this watch on yet? It’s quite a bit heavier than the SS version. Make sure you like the way it feels too.
