What is the attraction to the GMT. I know they have a big following but I am trying to understand where it comes from. Its not a dive watch. Its not a fancy Day Date Presidential. To me its something in between and I can't put my finger on why its so sought after.

It's the classic travel watch with a lot of history behind it. Designed by Rolex for Pan Am flight crews when Juan Trippe was head of Pan Am. It can do everything the Sub can do and more.

I would have to agree with Oscar.

I have owned two of each and prefer the GMT over the Submariner.

Safe for all water sports, robust, ability to monitor 2-3 timezones and a very beautiful timepiece.

And now the Cerachrom bezel insert doesn't fade like the red and blue used to on the painted aluminum one.

If Rolex perfects the red and blue ceramic - look out!

Agree with all of the above.

Don't get me wrong the Sub is a great watch and a true classic. But the GMT will dive deeper than most wearers would ever venture and provides extra timezones to boot. Add to that the bezel and bracelet options and you have the most versatile Rolex ever.

It's the historical aspect (aviation related) that I like most about the GMT. It is also extremely useful when crossing many timezones from international travel. It's an iconic watch !

sexner. Now I get how you can track 2 time zones but you said "2-3 time zones". I don't get how you do 3. Maybe you use the 24 hour hand for one, the regular hands for another while keeping track of the time zone your in with clocks around you other than your watch. Right?

12 hour hand for local time, 24 hour hand for a 2nd timezone, and rotating the bezel to quickly calculate a 3rd timezone.
