I know I'm going to hunted down and shot for saying this but....
Is it just me or is anyone else not attracted to or does not see the appeal of the Sub? I'm not knocking it because it is a wonderful piece without a doubt. Please go easy on me.

Wow! Tread lightly, neophyte.
Truth is the GMT is my favorite Rolex--by far--always has been and probably always will be. Sub isn't even in my top three. However, the Sub is, IMHO, the most iconic watch of all time. It is the most imitated, replicated, duplicated, impersonated . . . oh, I could go on and on! Ultimately, I would imagine, if you asked most people to choose the quintessential Rolex, they would pick the SS Sub (or even the TT Blue Sub). The Sub is the essence of what I--and many others--believe a Rolex should be. In conclusion, the Rolex Submariner is, dare I say, the blueprint for the modern watch. |

Yes, it is you!!
This is why there are so many different Rolex models, to each their own but the sub is an icon for Rolex! Allan |

The LV Sub is one of my favorite watches, I sold mine and have missed it since. I also have a 16613. But the 16610 is a watch I really don't care for and don't care to own.

Fair play. If everybody wanted the same thing, the world would be a boring place.
I don't really like the gmtc or the Turnograph so each to their own... J |

I must say I'm trying to get on board due to the fact I'd like to have a watch I can "beat on" and know that it will be good to go the next day!

I have to agree with Jimbo, it's a personal taste thing. I don't see the appeal of your Daytona over a Speedmaster, but we all share different veiwpoints thankfully.

I agree. I don't see the appeal of the sub. Perhaps at one time... but as it's been pointed out, it's the most replicated, duplicated, etc etc. It's also the Rolex that most people own.
When I bought my first Rolex, it was between the Sub and the GMT. I liked the sub because of it's subtleties, but I liked the GMT because I felt it was more unique. When the dealer suggest I get the sub because it's the watch that everyone goes for, and then even the security guard flashed his to prove it, I decided it had to be the GMT. I don't want a watch that everyone is wearing, real or fake. In my opinion the GMT provides more daily usable features than the Sub, and upon a glance, is far more unique. I'll take any flames as well, but I just don't get it. Never have. |

I do understand the appeal of the GMT (I'd get one if I didn't already have the Sub), but I definitely think the Sub has more usable daily features than the GMT does. A timing bezel is very useful. I use it quite often, not just on the Sub, but on other dive watches I have. A 2nd/3rd time zone is useful when you travel or if you're keeping track of someone across the world. Definitely not something I (or most people) use daily. I do agree that the GMT Master is more unique, though.

I'm also not a fan of the GMT when really as a big sub fan you would think I would like it. It's just the numbering on the dial that doesn't quite do it for me. Milgauss also has no effect on me.
I wonder if we will see a corrolation of those who like X also like X and dislike X...probably. |

It's only been within the last decade that Subs and GMTs have "come out of the closet". Until the big watch fad, you almost never saw one out in public. Any way, that's why Rolex makes a variety... something for everybody. Depends on your background, culture, and area of the country on what is popular or not.. It's kind of like MacDonald's carrying a chicken sandwich too...

It's all very personal isn't it? It would be boring if everyone yearned for the same watches! For me, I've always been drawn to the DJ and DD watches only (no diamonds though!) |

My issue with the classic sub was the hollow bracelet and the clasp which will be taken care of now! so once the SS with ceramic sub is out... its on my wrist!

I agree with your point but since it will also come with elephant-ear lugs (supercase) I won't be first in line, I may not even buy one

Well we all have opinions and I am very glad to see I'm not alone in my lack of enthusiasm for the GMTc. In fact, I don't really like any of the newer "supercase" watches that much at all. I truly believe they destroyed the graceful lines that to me are Rolex.
I do understand the appeal of the SUB however. I love the look, and the watch for all it represents and I understand why others do too. But, I am still amazed at the scope of it's mass appeal. It used to be the DJ that was most copied if I'm not mistaken, but I would defer to collectors on this one. In any event I don't have any problem with someone voicing their tastes here, popular or not......isn't that the true spirit of what a forum should be? I do, but it's just ones man's opinion. All that said, you will certainly be in the minority around here and in the collecting world in general regardings Subs, but so what. Enjoy the forum and keep posting..... Patrick

I do recognize that the sub is the most iconic Rolex and I respect that, but it simply doesn't appeal to me as much as the GMT's. Of course it's a great Rolex and probably the most popular watch in the world. I can't think of anything not to like about it, but it just doesn't wow me.

And I will likely be shot for this, I have tried to sell my Sub so that I can buy a GMT IIc and cannot bring myself to do it.

I don't see the appeal of the sub date at all, but I love the sub no date. I do realize the iconic nature of the sub date, had several friends that wore them in the service, but it's just not for me. It's a personal style thing and we're all different - thankfully!
